Top 5 Fun Activities To Do With Your Kids On A Rainy Day

childrens puzzle

When you have young children, bright, sunny days are great. You can spend time in the great outdoors, allowing your little ones to have fun and get rid of pent-up energy. However, what about rainy days? Just because you're stuck inside, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.

The fact is, there are countless activities you can do when it’s raining out, all you need is a bit of creativity. Consider the activities here to fill your rainy day with fun.

Create Homemade Watercolors

Do you have some young, budding artists in your house? If so, then you can help them create their own, vibrant watercolors.

With these paints, you can let the artist inside come out and play. What’s even better, is that the ingredients needed are likely in your cabinets. The basic recipe for this stunning paint includes:

  • Gel food coloring
  • Cornstarch
  • Light corn syrup
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda

Chances are, once you and your kids use these paints, you’ll never want to go back to store-bought options again.

Challenge Your Little One’s Minds

Another great way to spend a rainy day is by challenging your kid’s minds. Assembling puzzles is a great way of doing just that. By using puzzle boards, you can even move the activity outside once the rain stops.

If your kids are older, consider a Sudoku puzzle, crossword puzzle or word search. All of these are fun, and you can even make it a challenge. What’s even better is that your kids will be giving their mind a workout while having fun. It’s a win-win activity.

Make Dinner Together

Sit down with your children and come up with a dinner menu, then let them be in charge. You can make a list of everything you need and then take a trip to the store, letting your children take the lead when shopping for ingredients.

Your children will love feeling like they have control. Once you return home, let them help you prepare the meal and make sure they do as much as they can (as long as it’s safe for them to do so). You will likely be surprised about the satisfaction they get from helping.

Make Up a Play

Your child’s imagination is an amazing thing – let it run wild. Grab a few of their old Halloween costumes and all the “silly” clothing you can find to dress up and create a play. They will love getting to make up stories and people for the characters.

This will also let them flex their imagination muscle. You can even try giving them a few things to include to make it even more challenging. They will be using their creativity while having fun. Be sure to get out the video camera, you want to make sure you can look back on this fun memory.

Write Letters

If your children are old enough, teach them the right way to write letters. You can let them choose who to send the letter too, such as Grandma, or have them write letters for troops overseas. A great organization that is always looking for letter writers is Operation Gratitude. Check them out and get your kids involved.

If you are looking for some fun things to do with your kids on a rainy day, this list should help you get started. Keep in mind, you may just want to let them take the lead – chances are they have a few creative ideas of things you can do together. There’s no reason to let a rainy day go to waste when you can spend it having fun and learning.
