5 ways to relax more as a parent

Looking after children can be sometimes quite stressful. From cooking their dinners to washing their clothes, we sometimes forget to take a break from the world. As a result, this may have an impact on your mind, body and productivity! Therefore, we’ve come up with a few top tips to help you unwind through relaxation and wellbeing, supported by from Dr Mark Williamson, co-founder of Action for Happiness.


  1. Exercise - Exercise is a great solution to release tension as Dr Williamson says ‘our body releases chemicals called endorphins, which interact with the receptors in our brain to reduce our perception of pain and trigger positive feelings’. So what are you waiting for? Drop whatever you’re doing and go for a jog, swim, dance – you’re sure to feel great!


  1. Get some fresh air! – Just like we encourage our little ones to play outdoors, we must not forget that it is beneficial to our health too. According to Dr Williamson, ‘research shows that being active outdoors is hugely beneficial to our wellbeing’. So take a break, get out the home and … just … breathe…


  1. Socialise with friends – Unwind and have a little chat and catch-up with your friends! If something is really bothering you, sharing your feelings with a buddy can always alleviate stress.


  1. Sleep is key – there’s nothing worse than feeling lethargic, your eyes scraping against your eyelids and your brain feeling exhausted. Dr Williamson says ‘In our digital culture, it’s really important that we have a healthy relationship with our devices and that we avoid using screens late at night or in the bedroom’. Therefore, make sure you put all your devices away and unwind with a book or bath before bed. After all, how are you going to keep up the energy throughout the day with the children?


  1. Don’t forget ‘me’ time – As much as socialising with your friends is great, some quality ‘me’ time is also essential. Give yourself some time to collect your thoughts and clear your head. After the kids have gone to bed, you should perhaps set up your own relaxation space, light some candles and relax with no disturbances.
