Here are our top tips for bonding from our Huggies Wipes experts; Gayle Berry, baby bonding expert and Natalie Lee, Midwife.
The importance of touch and getting to know your baby
The five components that help create a bond between you and your baby are eye contact, the sound of your voice, smell and of course, touch - which produces the fifth component, oxytocin. Also known as the “love hormone”, oxytocin is produced whenever you have skin-to-skin contact with someone. It has a relaxing effect on the body of the person receiving the touch meaning that both you and your baby get a big feel-good boost from massage. When your baby is unhappy, your touch can help work wonders to soothe them.
The benefits of infant massage and baby yoga
Infant massage promotes the five components of bonding mentioned above, and is extremely beneficial to your baby's development. It's easy to get started, and incorporate into your daily routine.
It boosts circulation throughout their body, which helps the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and can provide stimulation to your baby's nervous system. It can assist with muscle development and the strengthening of bones by helping deliver calcium and vitamin D efficiently.
Feet are an especially key pressure point, and massaging them can affect the whole body. Foot massage also teaches your baby where their feet are, which improves their body awareness. Baby yoga helps babies get active and supports all body functions including digestion, nervous system development and circulation.
Making the most of nappy changing
Changing time is all too often rushed, but it's a great opportunity to bond and give your little one all your attention. If you can, let them keep their nappy off for a while and kick about. This will give you more time to massage their feet and legs and help create the perfect environment for bonding. The fewer artificial fragrances around you, the better. This lets you exchange your natural smell with your baby, which helps with bonding.
Creating time to treat yourself
Life is very fast-paced when you are a parent, but it's important to give yourself time to relax and enjoy your time with your baby. Nappy change times and massage provide an opportunity to do just that.
Even 5 minutes' worth of relaxing, stretching and spending time outside can be beneficial. Getting some fresh air at bedtime is a good way to relax at the end of the day.
Becoming a parent is a brand new experience, so embrace all the changes that come with it, and take your time getting to know your baby.
Taking care of little one (and you!) in the first few days
Set everything up at home, such as the cot, car seat and buggy. Testing is useful - imagine having to set up the car seat for the first time with a crying newborn in your arms. Always have your change bag with you, and keep it fully equipped. Baby's skin is very sensitive in the beginning. It will get less sensitive as they grow up, but it's always best to have a wipe that's natural, such as Huggies® Wipes. And to make extra sure, always try a wipe on your own skin before using it on your little one.
Cook in bulk and freeze meals.
It will give you more time for yourself - or to handle one of the many other tasks you'll inevitably encounter as a parent! Don't forget to get to sneak in some nap time for yourself. Your newborn will be up every 2-4 hours, and every wink of sleep will help. No one expects you to do everything on your own.
