"Unbelievable Economy and Luxury"
We've all dreamt it at some time in the past – of owning a big luxury car, with all the trimmings, but then after counting what's left at the end of the month, have realised that it's out of the question. It's hard enough keeping the old banger on the road, let alone a big luxury saloon.
However, if you were to do some quick and simple calculations, you would soon realise that owning a bigger and more upmarket car nowadays isn't as futile a dream as you might think.
I've just spent a few days in the company of one of Volvo's latest driv'e' versions of their S60 saloon. I was first introduced to the S60 last year (read more), at which point I was so impressed I think I must have been literally drooling as I wrote the review. Little has changed since. It's a sleek, impressive and yet understated car that leaves you in no doubt that you're driving something of exceptional quality. What is easy to miss is the fact that it is a frugal diesel workhorse capable of absolutely phenomenal economy without sacrificing performance or luxury.
We had the task of transporting our daughter to her first year at university together with everything that any first-year student needs to take. It was a big ask, but we managed to fit virtually everything she needed into the really deep boot and on the one spare back seat. It must be pointed out that even though the luggage space is really large, the opening is a little restricted, so packing in loads of smaller items is a breeze. However, if you have larger items or large boxes, it's a bit more of a struggle. The largest items had to be put on the rear seat as we couldn't fit them through the boot opening. Foldable items such as pushchairs would be swallowed up with ease though – many times over!
On the road the Volvo S60 is unbelievable for a car of this price. The frugal diesel is powerful, smooth, quiet and versatile and yet is able to return a combined MPG figure of over 65 miles per gallon. One third of a tank of fuel managed to take us over 270 miles. The maximum range on a single full tank is not far short of a thousand miles. Staggering! When you take into account that the Driv'e' range starts at just over £20,000 then you begin to realise what a tremendous value-for-money car this is. There aren't many cars at this price that can turn heads in the way this new Volvo does.
Aside from the luggage restriction mentioned above, it is so hard to find fault with this car. Whether you want a good all-round, roomy family car or a luxurious touring car to cover the miles in, the S60 delivers in bucketfuls.
