"A washable mattress"
Choosing a cot mattress for your baby is far from simple. The variations are seemingly endless – pocket sprung mattresses, foam varieties that remember the shape of your baby, ultra absorbent removable covers that lock away moisture and let the skin breath. The choice is endless. However, a friend recommended the PurFlo® mattress, which claims to be much better for your child than its on-shelf competition, and, more importantly, is totally washable.
So how does it work? The mattress is made up of several poles and plastic interjoining joints that lock together to make a rectangular frame over which slots the fully breathable SleepSurface™ mesh. The idea behind the mesh is that it allows free air circulation, preventing the re-breathing of CO2. It can also be easily slipped off and thrown into the washing machine, reducing the build up of House Dust Mites (a typical used adult mattress containing anywhere from 100,000 to 10 million mites inside). This is designed to relieve the symptoms of conditions such as asthma and eczema.
I decided to give it a try. Having just erected the cot, I was a little disheartened to open the mattress box and discover that this too needed building. However, I found it very quick and easy to slot the frame together and the mesh – which is rather like an enormous fabric envelope – slipped simply in place and was firmly secured by clips at one end. The result is a mattress that gave my baby plenty of support throughout the night and kept him fresh and cool. It fitted easily into the standard cot I had and I found it easy to wash (at 60 degrees) and dry so it could be fresh and ready to go by the time of the next sleep. Alternatively, you can purchase spare PurFlo SleepSurfaces separately, giving you a spare one to hand.
As it disassembles easily, the mattress can easily be taken with you when travelling and is perfect for grandparents and family who occasionally have babies to stay.
