"give them a go!" i was dubious about these but thought why not give them a try?
i have to be honest and say i only use them for bedding and towels.
they are easy to use and leave bedding feeling soft.they appear to clean as thoroughly as detergent and work out wash for wash a lot cheaper.
i'll definitely carry on using them and may even try them on my childrens clothes soon :-) Member review by julie - julie, mum to 4

"very enviromentally friendly and effective" Love them , use them for my nappy wash and other washes too. I like that I can add whatever fragrance I like ie lavender or tea tree , or just leave the washing as is , and have no fragrance. They leave my washing nice and soft. what more could a girl want ? "Who's Heard of Soap Nuts?"
Well I, for one, had never heard of soap-nuts until relatively recently and I would never have thought that a day would come when I'd turn on my automatic washing machine and not use washing powder! Yet my last week's worth of washing has been done solely with Soap Nuts!!
Soap Nuts are completely natural and believe it or not grow on The Soap Berry Tree. Sounds like something from an Enid Blyton book, doesn't it?
The way soap nuts work is that you take about half a dozen shells and chuck them in a draw string cotton bag. Then you have to stick the bag in the washing machine on top of your dirty washing and away you go.
When I took the washing out the first few times, I couldn't tell any difference at all. Seemed to be the same as using washing powder. A real plus! Clean washing and kind to the environment too!
But there was definitely a difference with my whites. Part of the reason is that a lot of the usual supermarket powders have optical brighteners which make things look cleaner and brighter. It does say on the EthicsTrading website (where my soap-nuts came from) that if you like your whites dazzlingly white you might want to add Ecover Laundry Bleach. In future, I will probably do that from time to time with my whites.
The other thing is that soap-nuts have no smell. So if you want fragrant washing then its recommended that you add a few drops of an essential oil to your bag. I used lavender and my bedding came out of the wash smelling better than it's ever done!
If you're sceptical and don't believe that soap-nuts really can wash your clothes properly, then I would certainly recommend that you try them for yourself. You can buy trial-size packs so there's no reason to spend a fortune. I'm fairly sure that after the first few washes, you'll be a soap-nut convert! :-)
