"Impressive Communications"
Samsung Pixon 12
Just before Christmas I was browsing some of the Camera stores looking for a camera for our daughter, who is about to embark on a round-the-world gap year trip. I became quite familiar with all the gadgets and gizmos that today's cameras provide.
Samsung, Fuji, Kodak, Olympus, Nikon and several others all have some fantastic features on their cameras, especially things like the face recognition and tracking, anti-blur, auto focus and exposure and of course the option to override the automatic options too.
Resolution is obviously a big selling point nowadays: the ability to capture more detail and brighter and more vibrant colours without them being lost in the pixel blur that you get with inferior quality offerings. 12 Mega-Pixel is pretty impressive by any standards and where the quality of the lens really came into its own was when taking a movie clip of some enormous waves crashing against the beach and pier in Brighton one particularly stormy morning. The flash is the new Xenon type and provided some excellent results, especially when using the red-eye reduction facility.
Forgetting the camera for a moment, the Pixon 12 is a pretty impressive communications tool with email, sms, mms, web browsing using all the latest mobile technologies and of course Wi-Fi connections where available, including the latest WPA2 encryption. A veritable office in your pocket really. I particularly liked the way you could switch between a phone-type keyboard and a full qwerty keyboard by simply rotating the display to a landscape format. The keyboard action was brilliant too, with both vibration and audio feedback for each key action. Using a slightly different technology to Apple's iPhone, it has a much more positive feel to it and the accuracy of typing was so much better.
Data storage for those high resolution photos and videos was somewhat limited with the built-in memory, but adding a £10 microSD memory card gave more than enough for a couple of week's holiday snaps and clips.
The Pixon 12 was a state-of-the-art, impressive piece of kit that I thoroughly enjoyed using and which provided some pretty impressive results all round. The detail and quality far exceeded anything I'd seen previously and.... excuse me.... “Oh, hi Mum. Yeah, I'm fine, how are you?... Hold on...” I forgot to mention... it's a phone too!
