"Fun day out whatever the weather"
We live close to Holt which is one end of the North Norfolk Railway so we visit the NNR a lot especially as William our eldest is absolutely steam train mad!
The NNR is open nearly all year round apart from a few weeks in January when they close up.
The route runs through magnificent Norfolk countryside between the towns of Holt and Sheringham with stations at Weybourne and Kelling Heath in between.
The prices are quite reasonable at £10.50 for an adult, £7 for a child (up till the age of 5 children are free they also do a family ticket for £35 which also give you a £5 voucher to use in one of their shops.
There are several different timetables that they run at different times of the year so worth checking their website before travelling
http://www.nnrailway.co.uk/timetable.php
During school holidays they mostly operate the red timetable which is their most intensive one with trains very frequently.
There is plenty to do at each station which i'll list below:
Holt - Large model railway, gift shop and tea room with picnic tables, there is also a mini ride on railway and a small museum with lots of history of the M&GN railway which is incredibly interesting. Don't be fooled this station is not in Holt the town is about a mile away but there is a lovely old Routemaster bus that operates the route (for a small charge) Holt a is a beautiful town with lots to see.
Kelling Heath - Lots of fantastic walks through the woods here it's also the home of Kelling Heath holiday park which has some nice facilities too, steam trains only stop here on the journey from Holt as the hill is too steep for them on the way to Holt to get started again, diesel services stop both ways. Request stop only.
Weybourne - Small village, again the station is a trek away from the town but you can also walk straight into Sheringham park from here as well as head for the coastal footpath. Large station here with lovely gardens for sitting in with lots of birds flying around. Plenty of books magazines on steam railways/model railways being sold and homemade cakes mmmmmmm, there's also a model railway in a converted goods carriage where children get to drive a model train.
Sheringham - Jewel in North Norfolks crown, the station is smack bang in the town centre with plenty of original independent shops selling a huge range of products, station has a converted carriage for children to play trains in (has a small mock up of a train inside with flags, bells etc for the children), again there are tea rooms etc here
The rover tickets allow you to get on/off all day with nothing further to pay so you can really explore or just stay on the train and go back and forth all day if the weather is bad.
If you live locally you can get a residents permit which gets you 75% off all tickets or if you can plan ahead you can buy a members pass from the M&GN for £17 for an adult, £25 for a couple or £28 for a family for 12 months you only pay 25% so even if you're holidaying you can still get your money back easily.

The staff are always friendly and polite and more than happy to help you out. Watch out for their event days as they're a really really good day/weekend out.
Starting soon they are starting work to put the level crossing back in at Sheringham to link the NNR back up to the main rail network for the first time since Dr Beeching cut it off this will mean there will be charter trains come in from London and visiting loco's can come in via rail as well it should be ready for March 2010!!
All in all a brilliant way to spend the time and well worth visiting whether you like steam trains or not
