"My girls loved this game!"

I was really pleased with this board game as my girls love competing against each other - and this game didn't disappoint them!

'My First Brainbox' is a refreshingly simple concept. The rules are easy to pick up and I found that after reading over them with my girls, and showing them a couple of practice runs, they picked it up very quickly. (There is nothing worse than opening a game up and the rules being so long and detailed that you struggle to get your head around everything.) It was a relief to open up the box and simply see the stack of cards, a 10 second egg timer and a dice. No messing around with setting up boards and doling out cards to each player.

The cards are kept neatly in the box throughout the game and each player simply takes a card to study for 10 seconds (as timed by the egg timer) before passing to the next person . The player then roles the dice and the person holding the card asks the player the question number corresponding to whatever number the die produced. The questions vary in complexity so it really is luck of the draw. If the player correctly remembers the answer to the question, they get to keep the card. If not, it is put back in the box to the back of the pile. The next person then selects a card and the process is repeated. After 10 minutes, the person with the most cards is the winner! The fact that it is a ten minute game is also a huge plus for us. Small children have a pretty short attention span so breaking it up into 10 minute blocks was ideal - they kept interested for the whole 10 minutes - usually more. They sometimes play several ten minute games in a row before attention wanders!

This game is aimed at age 5 and over, and as a rough guide I'd say this is pretty accurate. I included my 4 year old, who is at pre-school, and is quite clued up and she didn't struggle too much. She even managed to win a couple of games and the look of concentration on her little face when she was studying the pictures was hilarious. It is described as the 'ten minute memory recall game' and this is exactly what it is. Obviously younger children struggle more with memorising the pictures, but it is definitely a good way to encouage memory skills. The rules can even be adjusted to perhaps give very young players a few seconds more to memorise the card (that's if your 6 year old will permit this - mine didn't, so the 4 year old was treated as an equal!) It also encouages reading skills as my 6 year old insisted on reading out the questions to the person next to her, even though she struggled with some words.

I think this game can retail for up to £12.95 and although I would pay this, it would definitely be the maximum I would pay. I think a fair and reasonable price would be around the £10 mark.

Another positive of this game is the packaging. It comes in a sturdy box with a lid (12x12cm), and the cards are made of a thick cardboard. It seems robust and will probably stand the test of time. The packaging is bright and fun, and was definitely intriguing to my girls when I showed them the box. The size of the box means it is easily and neatly stored away. It also has the plus points of being produced by 'The Green Board Game Co', so is ethically sourced and made from recycled materials.

Overall, my girls, and myself thoroughly enjoyed this game. It appeals to a wide range of ages, so is a good all-rounder. My girls are keen to play again, and again...so I might have to invest in more games from this series! I would definitely recommend it to friends and family, and would definitely consider buying it as a gift.

"Great for reception aged children and above"

My first Brainbox is a ten minute memory recall game.

My son is due to start in Reception next month and I feel that this is a bit too advanced for him. It states on the box suitable for ages 5 and up and i would say its spot on.

The my first brainbox has several different genres, the box i received was "My first pictures" where the aim of the game is to be the player with the most cards after ten minutes.

The youngest player starts off the game by taking a card from the box, there is a dice and am egg timer which lasts for ten seconds, after the player has taken a card they then turn the timer over and study the picture until the timer runs out.

They then pass the card to another member, we sat in a circle and passed the card to the person on the right of us, roll the dice and whatever number it lands on eg the number 2, the player has to try and answer the 2nd question on the other side of the card.

If the player is correct then they keep the card, if not, they have to put the card back into the box and the next player chooses a card, again we played to the person to the right.

The person with the most cards after ten minutes is the winner!

All of the answers to the questions are on the picture side of the cards.

There are 55 Picture/Question cards, 1 rules and information card, 1 ten second timer and 1 six sided die.

My children are both aged under five, they are just turned 4 and 2 years and this game was very testing for them but with an awful lot of perseverance they now have realised what the aim of the game is. They didnt get many of the questions correct but it will improve their short term memory which can only be a good thing. I would recommend this for age 5 as they are in school by that age and will absorb a lot more information between the ages of 4 and 5 so im sure my eldest will appreciate the game more when he is slightly older.

The great thing about this game is the fact that it all just goes in the box and stows away nicely amongst my books, not looking out of place because its not very big.

Its made by a company called "The Green Board Game Co", they say that their board games are ethically sourced and made from recyclable and recycled materials and that game play is tested in family and school environments also multi-level games mean that adults and children can play together.
