"A good introduction" I have the Meccano butterfly which gets put through the mill by my friend's 3 year old daughter Karly every week. She always complained that the toys at my house were just like her brothers (ie baby toys)! My other kids toys were too old for her so she had to suffer baby toys until Butterfly came along!
The box is bright and certainly attracts the eye, so it's something kids would look at. The little screw driver that comes with it is just the right size for little hands and my friend's daughter had no problem getting to grips with what had to be done. It says for age 2+, but I think an adult would need to help a younger child to build each model (this one builds three different models) The pieces are just the right size and are brightly coloured, although I had to help bend the wings for one model, although I'm sure, in time, with constant play they'd be easier for a child to bend.
It's priced around £6.99, and for what you get I think that's a good price. It certainly looks as if it would cost more.
It has made one little 3 year old happy so much so that the weekly visits have jumped to twice weekly so that Karly can play with the 'flutterby'! Member review by Yvonne - mum of 5

"A tough toy!" My son Kian has the Meccano - Vroom the Tractor toy. It is for ages 2+ and he was 25 months old when it arrived.
The toy comes in a nicely illustrated, colourful box. It contains 40 parts (nuts, bolts and screws) which can be used to make up three different toys. There is also a plastic tool (like a screwdriver) which you use to fix all the pieces together. There is also an instruction booklet which is illustrated rather than having written directions, so you can see where all the bits are supposed to fit together to assemble each toy.
On opening the box I took out all the bits & pieces to have a proper look. They are all made of really sturdy plastic. The pieces are also bright and colourful to appeal to small children and they are very chunky so they are easy for little hands to grab! The chunky screwdriver tool also has a rubberised handle for extra grip.
Now it came to putting the pieces together to make a toy! Kian wanted to make the Vroom the Tractor first (the other two toys are a trike and an indian chief). I looked at the instructions and pieces and straight away knew there was no way Kian would be able to put this together, which is a shame as it is recommended on the box for age 2+.
I managed to follow the instructions to put it together while Kian passed me pieces so he felt involved. When it was put together i let him 'tighten' the screws with the screwdriver to make him think he had helped with constructing it!
Once put together the Vroom the Tractor toy was really nice. It was bright and colourful but most of all it was very sturdy, so excellent for a boisterous 2 year old to play with. There was no way this toy was going to break in quite a while, if ever! He loves playing with it and it is really strong. He likes to lean down on it as he pushes it along the floor and it hasn't buckled under his weight!
We have since made the other two toys but Kian wants to change it back to Vroom every time. He's not really interested in it as the indian chief because he doesn't really 'do' anything and the trike is ok but not half as robust as the tractor when it's assembled so he can't play as roughly with it!
Overall I was initially rather disappointed with the toy when i realised Kian couldn't do much of the construction side of it, but on second thoughts it's a great introduction to construction and it is a toy that will grow with him. In a few years time i'm sure he'll be able to put a few of the parts together himself!
The price of the toy is around £19.99. I would say that it is OK value for the toy because, as I said earlier in the review, it will last ages and 'grow' with the child.
