"Beautifully presented"
This is a really nice reassuring story with an old fashioned feel to it. I had a few wry smiles at some of the antics of the featured characters in the book as reading from a parents perspective the scenario is a familiar one. Some of the illustrations are in black and white ink and some in colour and they all add a great deal to the text.
I was a little worried that the content would be too scary for my 5 year old as she sometimes can't even watch Postman Pat! There is a section in the story where the friends are battling with monsters in their imagination and there is some mild anticipation however it is so well written both my five and two year old listened with pleasure and my 5 year old kept the story to reread and look at the pictures. We have had this as a bedtime story a few times now and I always enjoy reading it to my girls and they enjoy having it read so win win all round.
Would be lovely as a gift.

"What a lovely book!"
What a lovely book! The story is great - simple but I'm sure it is familiar to everyone who has ever build a den in their back garden. My 5 year old loved it - it is written in rhyme so it flows very well and the illustrations are exceptional as you would expect from Helen Oxenbury. My 6 month old even enjoyed looking at the pictures.
Overall, a beautifully illustrated book with a simple story that I'm sure most children can relate to.
