"A French Adventure" Pulling into the campsite on Berny Riviere, I was surprised by the lack of people wandering around the site. Every time I have stayed on this type of accommodation in the past there have always been crowds of sun-seekers, ping-pong players and eager swimmers strolling around the place. Maybe it was because we visited slightly out of season, or maybe it was purely because the campsite was so tucked away in the midst of a beautiful, tranquil environment, but my Mum and Stepdad were certainly happy with the calm and peaceful atmosphere.
It was the perfect location for the type of holiday they enjoy most "relaxed and going with the flow" no strict timetables with plans laid out for every day. It was pleasant to be able to wake up whenever you wanted and just chill out all day. The daytime activities depended on the weather and I found that there was definitely a lot to do when the sun was out. The campsite provided three swimming pools - two outdoor, and an indoor one with slides. The first time we arrived at the pool I was surprised at how busy it was! Children ran around excitedly at the thought of playing on the slides, while their parents lounged around on the sun beds. It provided a total contrast to the deserted campsite we arrived to earlier.
Also on the site were ping-pong tables; a football pitch; a fake beach with a lake to swim in; and a separate lake for canoes and pedaloes which were well priced. My stepbrother Matthew, Katie and I enjoyed half an hour on the canoes which was fun until we got tangled up in someone's fishing line! Ooops!
As well as these activities, Canvas provided day time Kid's Clubs for tiny toddlers up to older teenagers so there's plenty to keep the younger generation occupied if the parents want some peace! The Kid's Clubs put on talent shows, do various arts and crafts, and take trips to the lake for thrilling water sports adventures!
However, we found that on the days when the rain poured relentlessly, there was not much we could do but sit inside the lodge. For some people the idea of this is bliss to be able to relax on the sofa with a book inside a gorgeous Scandinavian style lodge. It was made entirely out of wood which looked very picturesque as brilliant green leaves peeked out from behind, and the lake glistened in front of it. Unfortunately, there was one downside to the fact the whole house was made of wood and that was the noise. It was impossible to walk up or down the stairs in the middle of the night without deafening creaks echoing around the house, waking everyone else up!
Anyway, back to the rain... I think my parents certainly enjoyed being tucked up in the lodge while the rain tipped down outside. However for teenagers like Katie, Matthew and I, we were slightly stuck for things to do. Me and Katie usually found ourselves showering, washing, dressing, and doing our hair and make-up for the evenings. The night life was a total contrast to the serene days. The bar was full of people and it gave the campsite a more animated feel. We found the bar service was excellent and the waiters were very friendly towards us. All of the staff spoke English very well so I barely needed to practise my French!
There were pool tables upstairs and an internet café where the younger children often were, while downstairs in the bar the atmosphere was very exciting. Katie and I chatted to many of the reps who were extremely friendly and we even decided that during our gap years we want to become reps! If it gave us the chance to re-visit this campsite, or one like it, I would be absolutely thrilled because I had an amazing time and would love to return! Member review by Maddie - 16 year old
