"An impressive looking piece of hardware"
Ben 10 is all the rage with, it seems, any boy between the ages of three and 14. My son, 3, loves the characters, loves the action and loves the different aliens. I have to admit that it's just about the only programme I watch with my son that genuinely entertains me too. The Ben 10 Alien Laboratory therefore had a great weight of expectation on its shoulders.

Firstly, the lab itself is an impressive looking piece of hardware -a sort of cross between Scooby Doo's Mystery Machine and Convoy- and it's one that can easily be used as such. Then, when opened up it has a series of distinct activities. Some of these can be carried out easily; such as dissolving 'Alien rocks' (a little like bath bombs) to reveal a smaller version of the show's aliens, or replicating alien lifeforms in plasticene. A small 'microscope' that allows Manga-colourful views from the show is also quite fun.

The whole set looks great and is a lot of fun to set up. My son is only 3, a year younger than the target audience, and yet he was incredibly excited by the lab from the moment the box was opened. His favourite pieces, predictably, are the tiny aliens that emerge from the 'rocks'. Even four weeks later he's still carrying around the first two in his pockets. The lab comes with two and you can buy further sets of two from most toyshops for approximately £4.
This is a good addition to the welter of Ben 10 toys on the market, and one that will impress most young lads immediately. It isn't necessarily the sort of toy that will keep them fixated for hours at a time but it's proven to be one that will be brought out at some point in the day for some serious action. Tom often uses it in tandem with the other Ben 10 toys that litter his room. Ours came from www.thetoyshop.com, a fabulous site for all things Ben 10-ish.
