"The future for books?"
I saved every penny from top cash back and eventually managed to save enough for what I thought was the height of extravagance, a Kindle. Don't get me wrong, I love books. I adore the feel, the smell, the nature of books but storage has always been an issue.
I explored a number of e reader options before deciding on the kindle. When receiving emails and large documents at work I have always preferred to print them out than read them on a screen, and I felt that if I used a backlit e-reader it would be the same as that. So with it's e-ink pearl display, the Kindle was really the only choice.
It is so easy to use. The most complicated bit was getting it linked up to the wireless (in our house) as it involved finding the key for our secured network (not an easy feat!). But once it was hooked up I was off downloading 2 of the vast freebie books on offer to begin with. Within seconds they are on your Kindle and ready to read.
I wondered how it would work with childrens books, as DD is at that age where she is learning to read. The font size can be managed which means you can alter the number of words on a screen, making much more complex books accessible to DD who isn't put off by pages of small print. There is a large selection of free books for children as well as for adults and these incorporate pictures as well as words (though you can't alter the font size of a pictorial book).
As it was free , I decided to try Homer's Odyssey, in which the Kindle came into it's own. As you can imagine it's not plain simple english so when I come across a word I don't know I just highlight it and the inbuilt dictionary shows the meaning. I just love this ability to fully comprehend the text.
With the ability to rate books after reading, and one click buying for books, it really is a versatile tool. You can access amazon from the kindle on the move. I didn't go for the 3g version thinking that mostly I will be somewhere with wifi, but I think you can browse the web with the 3g version.
I don't think I could have warranted the outlay if it hadn't been for the tcb savings money, but I am so glad I did. I don't even want to read the paper books I haven't read yet!
