School Dinners Have Never Been So Sweet!

‘School dinners’ - two words which are enough to send a shiver down your spine, as you revert back to the days when meat was served with thick gravy, sloppy mashed potato and a “You’ll get what you’re given and like it!” These days, there may be more of a variety of food on offer, but the standard has certainly declined and only thanks to the persistent efforts of advocates like Jamie Oliver are things beginning to change. If you feel the nutritional merit of the food in your child’s school is sadly lacking then there are several alternative measures that you yourself can take.

It is so easy and often cheaper to prepare your child a healthy nutritious sandwich to keep them going all day, rather than see them lagging behind in the afternoon from the effects of sausage, chips and beans! Most children love honey sandwiches and just because they're sweet it doesn't mean they're unhealthy. Although ther's honey and then ther's HONEY! Spirits Bay Manuka Honey has a delicious taste to satisfy a child’s sweetest tooth, but it is the unrivalled health benefits which lie beneath the taste that make it so good for little tummies.

The antibacterial and antiviral properties of Spirits Bay Manuka Honey work to keep your child’s stomach healthy by destroying the bad bacteria and aggressive acids that are commonly found down below. The honey also helps to boost the immune system as well as re-hydrating the system after problems such as diarrhoea. If that wasn’t enough, the honey coats the stomach to fight infection and destroys the Staphylococci and Streptococci bacteria found in the common cold.

Simpsons Get Fruity
Bart and Lisa Simpson join together to promote Bio-Synergy’s Fruit Bars, which will be launched nationwide in July in time for this years blockbuster launch of the first ever The Simpsons the Movie. Bio-Synergy worked closely with 20th Century Fox on the development of the fruit bars to ensure that a healthy snack was produced using the Simpsons licence.

Children have high nutritional needs, but fairly small appetites. So it’s crucial all meals and snacks they eat are packed with nutrients. Good nutrition is vital if they’re to make the most of their childhood and grow into healthy adults. Bio-Synergy’s main objective was to ensure that the fruit bar for children would be free from artificial colours and flavours. The Simpson fruits bars contribute to five a day and have been made to ensure youngsters find them tasty treats while parents know they are getting an extra portion of fruit and a healthy snack.

All too often foods aimed at children are packed with junk which can make them moody or irritable. Plus long term, they can harm child development. Here however is a fruit bar which children will love to see in their packed lunch box and parents are more than happy to see them chomping on safe in the knowledge it’s doing them good. The bars were developed following research of 3,000 kids and their parents. BioSynergy found out what fruits they liked and what they loved about their naughty treats.

The Simpsons Fruit Bars also have no sweeteners, trans fats, additives and flavourings and are free from genetically modified ingredients. By making eating fruit fun and funky, Bio-Synergy hope to encourage children to choose healthier foods and develop a taste for food with health benefits. This will hopefully lay the foundations for their future health and well-being. If you despair over your child’s sweet tooth, these bars could have them reaching for something healthy rather than the cookie jar!

Incidentally, the Simpsons fruit bars are also brilliant for children with allergies as they’re free from dairy, gluten and wheat but look and taste great.

Healthier Alternatives to Crisps for Children
In the UK up to 50% of children eat at least a pack of crisps a day. Unhealthy snacking poses a long-term threat to children's health including obesity. The impact of children's diets on their performance in school in now widely acknowledged and many parents would prefer their children to eat healthier snacks with less fat than crisps.

Common lunch box snacks such as crisps are digested quickly leading to a boost in blood sugar followed by a slump in energy levels. The result is tiredness and lack of concentration. Foods of this type have a high Glycaemic Index (GI) and a high Glycaemic Load (GL).

GI is a measure of how quickly the carbohydrate content of food is digested and raises the blood sugar level. GL is a more detailed measure of the quality (GI) and quantity of carbohydrate. It gives a better indication of what effect food is going to have on blood sugar levels.

nairns Oat Bakes
Unlike fried potato crisps, nairn’s Oat Bakes have low GI and GL because they are made from 100% wholegrain oats, providing slow energy release. This translates into improved concentration for children and better performance at school with fewer energy dips and less hyperactivity. The Oat Bakes are made from only simple, natural and wholesome ingredients, including 100% wholegrain oats. They contain no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives, no hydrogenated fat, no added sugar and no wheat. nairn's Oat Bakes contain less than half the fat of leading brands of crisps, and are also lower in calories and salt.

Patrick Holford, founder of the Institute of Optimum Nutrition said, “nairn’s Oat Bakes are a great alternative to snacking on crisps. They help keep blood sugar and energy levels even throughout the day. They also help you feel fuller for longer so you don't feel hungry again so soon”

nairn’s Oat Bakes are available in three delicious flavours: Cheese; Tomato, Garlic & Basil and Lemon & Cracked Black Pepper. At last, a delicious healthy baked alternative to traditional fried potato crisps is available, made with simple wholesome ingredients. nairn's Oat Bakes are a snack that any parent will be pleased to put in their child's lunch box.
