Travelling With Small Children

Travelling with babies and young children does not have to be the cause of much anxiety!

Choose a holiday company with family experience and the right sort of facilities close to hand, and you and your family can relax and have a great time. Early summer is an ideal time to travel with little ones when you’ll find warmer weather, quieter resorts and great value holiday prices.

Consider all of the options and do some research. For example, as well as all-inclusive hotel holidays there are self-catering cottage holidays, activity breaks and camping (including luxury mobile homes, lodges, chalets and tents) both in the UK and abroad

Many holiday companies offer children’s clubs providing a safe place for them to play and make new friends and babysitting services offering you the chance to enjoy a little time on your own. Some will supply travel cots, high chairs and night lights – remember to ask when you book to make sure you know what to pack.

Baby milk and solids are easily obtainable abroad and are similar to those in the UK, however it is advisable to take the brands of food and powdered milk your baby is used to. If you plan to make up packets of baby food on the journey, keep a thermos of warm water handy. If your baby is drinking fresh milk ensure that it is pasteurised. In a hot climate you will find that babies need to drink more as they dehydrate very quickly in the heat.

Disposable nappies are easily obtainable in all European countries. There are changing facilities for babies on most cross-channel ferries and most motorway service areas have nursing or changing rooms.

All babies and young children have very delicate skin and should be kept out of direct sunlight. It is important to keep baby in the semi-shade and when travelling in the car it is worth using a sunshade which attaches to the window to keep children shaded from the sun. Use a sun block or high factor sun protection cream on all exposed parts of the body, and remember to re-apply regularly.

If you are travelling by car, don’t forget to leave enough room in the car for a folding buggy or a back carry pack.

And have fun … happy holidays.
