What to do for Colds and Flu

Spring brings with it the realisation of change and the knowledge that summer is coming again. Out of all of the seasons this, believe it or not, is the worst for epidemics and viruses.
Spring is the birthing season and viruses (such as cold and flu viruses) start to develop and grow after lying dormant through winter. As it gets warmer the viruses breed more actively and become stronger. Once active they travel around through the air, through touch and also through hosts from one person to another and normally through the breath. If your immune system is strong then you may just carry it for a short period of time until your body removes it. If your immune system is not so strong then the virus may enter the body more easily and you will start to feel unwell.

Typically you will have cold symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat, fever, chills, tiredness and sneezing. With the flu virus it often penetrates deeper into the body and will cause more severe symptoms such as muscle ache and extreme fatigue. Common viruses such as the cold virus are known to have been in existence for over 20,000 years but they never die out as they keep changing their form. Because of this aspect of them it is impossible to find a single cure for a virus. Each person needs to be treated with an assortment of ingredients.

That’s where herbal medicine is very effective as you are assessed individually - even for a cold! Herbs naturally have anti bacterial and anti viral properties. As herbalists, we combine many herbs together to allow for the changing aspect of viruses. Herbs can also help to improve the immune system and the Qi (energy) which can become exhausted as your body fights off an invasion. It is very important to treat viruses immediately. If they are not treated quickly they may work passed the immune system and into the body’s deeper tissue where they can remain for many years causing disorders such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or ME.

Treatment principles:
Treat quickly using a sweating method (never exercise) drink hot drinks such as fresh ginger root and go to bed. Eat after sweating.
Use fresh ginger root grated and made into a tea with a little bit of fresh black pepper ground into it to help you to sweat. DO NOT use dried ginger or teabags
If this is not effective after 24 hours you should use herbal medicine. We produce an excellent product for colds and flu in a capsule form called Jing Fang Bai Du.

Preventing colds:
Eat and sleep well.
Reduce alcohol
Improve immunity with herbs but not Echinacea.
Drink 1 mug of fresh ginger tea each morning
If you feel even remotely unwell take some Jing Fang capsules as a prevention.
To improve your immune system use some herbal pills called Yu Ping Feng.
