Are you allowed to take photos of your child/ren in school productions, such as nativity plays etc?

I am asking this because, at our school we're only allowed to take them at the end of the play & only of our child on their own, but I just looked online & found that the guidelines of the Data Protection Act means that you should be allowed to take them for personal use (family albums etc). I can understand not being able to put them on Facebook or something, but for personal use I think it should be allowed.

Here's where I found the guidelines... http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Nl1/Newsroom/DG_192998

I ticked yes on behalf of my school - not Ella obviously. Most of our parents film the show and it is like being famous during the show. Papparazzi hasn't a look in. Staff have to make sure we have hair done and make up on, cos we end up in a LOT of the photos being on the stage with the kids.
Although this year looking very unlikely nativity will go ahead. Snowed in again tomorrow and dress rehearsal is supposed to be Friday. We haven't rehearsed with a full school yet, and only been on the stage once - Monday when lets be honest none of the staff really cared less about it, as we were all facing being stranded in school over night

No idea yet cos Ellis is too little but this really is another sign of the world going crazy. I think its completely disgusting that you cant take photos of a play etc or other children with your kids. Photos bring back amazing memories (and some that you want to forget!!) it is a shame that people are being denied them. :(

I have no idea about the schools here, although I think, judging by the rules at Oscar's toddler groups, it's unlikely. At his toddler groups, you're not allowed to take photos at all.

I put no for school, but we can for the nursery.

Well we can take them of our own child, but that's impossible at Sports Day or on stage, you always get another child which isn't allowed, reason being is our school has had children under Social Services in the past (might even still be some now for all I know) and HT takes no chances as a few years ago two kids were at the school and there mother wasn't meant to know where they were, she found out and went ballistic at the school, terrifying two classes as she thumped on the door and windows. Staff can take photos during the year of kids whose parents/carers have said it's ok.
It is annoying, but loads of parents do it anyway, they just don't get caught!

Nursery is fine as teachers know every single parent and there are no care orders. No doubt that will change if there are in the future.

Our swimming pool has a no photo policy, fine when the kids are in with general public, but completely obscure when it's a private pool party and every parent has said it's fine to take their kids pics!!

We are allowed to take photos and footage of my daughter's nativity at preschool provided it is 'for personal use only' and it states on the letter we were given that 'sharing on internet sites is strictly prohibited'

We are not allowed at all at my sons nursery. But we are give the option as to whether or not we can have his pics on the wall in the nursery and we can see them in the nursery. You also have to give your permission to have your child in other childs pictures and give permission to be in the local paper. It stresses that it is optional but you dont want your child to feel left out in the classroom do you??

we are allowed - if a parent objects then the child doesnt get to be in the production.

There was a custody case going on at the school and those children werent to be photographed.

I filmed my lot this week - it was so cute!! Mat missed it as he was working so it was the only way for him to see their christmas shows!
