I can't remember which brand of baby rice I used. I would give the rice before the milk feed. As for water, I stopped sterilizing the juice cup around 6 months, but I always poured boiling water around it and used cooled boiled water for their drinks at least until a year old.

I used the Aptamil baby rice with Lewis but that was only because that was what formula he was on. To be honest I used to vary them about to see if there was any inparticular that he liked. Id try giving a few spoonfuls of rice before his milk feed, thats what we did with Lewis and the hungry little horace would eat a full bowl of rice, then up to 8 oz of milk and still look for more lol As for drinking water Im not sure what the guidelines are? When I was weaning it was cool boiled water from the kettle but when my sister weaned her baby earlier on in the year she was told she could just use water out the tap. Id ask a HV if your not too sure though.

Oscar had an adverse reaction to baby rice, so I didn't use it for more than a week. He was much happier on mashed up friuts and veg, such as banana and avocado, sweet potato, carrots etc. He was far less irritable and far less consipated! He went 10 days without a bowel movement on baby rice.
If you decide to go with baby rice, I'd use milk initially, and give it to him before a feed. That way, he can differentiate between his food and bottles, as he'll always know that solids come first.
I didn't bother sterilising cups etc, after Oscar was 5 months old, as by then he was already sitting up and crawling, and always had something or another in his mouth after he'd been crawling around with his hands on the floor, so I didn't see much point after that. I used to give him cooled boiled water initially as a drink, but after 9 months or so, I just gave him bottled water.
I didn't use baby rice because it didn't occur to me and he was happy with pureed/mashed fruit and veg anyway. Before 12 months he was on adult cereals, too, basicaly Weetabix and porridge made up with hot milk.

I started Lucy on Plum Baby organic 4 grain porridge - it's gluten free, so suitable under 6 months, and is much tastier and more nutritious than baby rice, Lucy loved it! I used cooled boiled water for everything up to 6 months (and possibly a bit after too, I was paranoid about her drinking water straight from the tap )
