Hello and Welcome! :D

Im Vickie, mummy to 2 yr old Rohan and I am at the same stage as you, wanting to start potty training, but not quite sure how to go about it. Have a look at the thread below, its really helpful and useful.

If he's not showing any interest then my advice would be to wait. I have trained my 2 eldest sons now (the middle one in the last month) & I can honestly say it's so much easier when they are ready & willing!

I know you are pregnant & you want to get it over with before the baby is born but it's not that hard with a newborn hun! My eldest was 2.5 when my middle lad was born & I was thinking the same as you, but he wasn't having any of it! After struggling for a couple of weeks I decided to leave it a bit. I tried every 4 weeks to see if he was ready & a couple of months later he took to it like a duck to water!

It wasn't as hard as I imagined with a new baby, in fact, it's been a lot harder this time round with a 1 year old cos he's been crawling the floor & trying to get to the potty as soon as Lucas had filled it! We've ended up with wee wee on the floor from lightning Zac more than once!

ha ha, bless him!
I agree though, you have to wait until they understand the concept, hence why I have the potty out for him to play with, i have decided to leave it a few months.
I had a good think about it last night, and realised that he doesnt understand the concept yet. He doesnt know what a "wee" is, far less that he has to get it in the potty. I have reasoned that he was only 2yrs old six weeks ago, its cold and horrible outside and he is wearing lots of clothes, so I have decided to wait until spring to try to see if he is more receptive then. At least then, he will be a bit older, he will possibly understand more, the weather will be warmer and he can run around in his pants, or easy pull -down joggers.
I just feel he doesnt get it yet, so gonna take a step back for a bit.
The tips are fantastic though, and you can easily adapt them to your child and their likes. I will definately be using them when the time comes. x

thanks for the advice im surprised he hasnt wanted to use a potty yet he tries to be so independant on himself. doesnt like people feeding him anything and hes only just started to to want to learn more words as hes frustrated that no one ever know what he wants. but hes great practically ive realised he plays with toys more properly when hes on his own then what he will when people are round he tends to group toys and line them up. i think hes going to be be a right sproty kid when hes older.

Generally boys take longer than girls to potty train. The average age to start is around 2 1/2, but as the others have said if he doesn't understnad the concept there is no point in trying to train him.

I tried to train my eldest when she was just over two and she freaked out every time she had an accident. needless to say that only lasted a day as I gave up and tried a few months later when she has the understanding and training was a breeze!

Buy a potty, buy the pants, explain about what the potty is for and just generally let him get used to having it around. Take it slowly and try to let him lead, don't push it or you'll just make it a longer harder process.

You don't say exactly how old your son is (just 2, nearer to 3?), but if he'll still be 2 when the baby is born I'd presonally leave it until the baby is hear as you could have him trained only for him to revert back once the baby comes along and turns his world upside down!!
