Post subject:  Schools ?

It is so confusing, my little girl starts school sept 2012 and there are lots of changes being made in the schools in my area as they need 400 more places by 2014 ! s if the whole first, middle and high school systems wasn't new to me already now the council website starts that all first schools are to become infant schools and all middle schools are to become junior schools ??. What if the difference in these types of school ? Where I grew up we had primary and secondary schools and then college/uni :?

No idea hun! We had the same as you growing up. Although I do know that some schools where I am are just primary schools, so they only have an intake for reception. But some schools are JMI (junior, middle, Infant) & in those you have to apply for a place in reception & then again for a place in year 3. I think that's the main difference, but whatever school you apply for, you will get a letter from them in year 2 if you need to apply again.

I applied for Kian & Lucas to go to the nursey at the local school & then they got the admission forms for the Reception year in their school bags to bring home. Just make sure you apply for the nursey & reception places & then you'll be ok from there cos they will inform you if you need to apply again for year 3 etc.

It must be different in different regions I'm assuming. Here we have infants school, then junior school and then senior or secondary school. I have no idea of the process of actually getting into them though lol!

No idea of the change of names coming though?

We had to apply for Louis to go to nursery which is 3 minutes walk then reapply for infant school which is 2 minutes walk even though the same name we had to apply then in year 2 have to reapply for junior school which is 15 miutes away..

We are not guaranteed a place in either school even though Louis has gone to the nursery...

When i was younger i went into the same infants, junior school and choce my senior school..

Just nursery, primary and secondary up here. Register for nursery and register for primary, no need to register for secondary as primary schools all feed into nearest High School.
Simple!!

Yes that's the system I know and love !,

Why do they have to make everything so complicated ! apparently been told that there is 1 year age difference between infant and first school and 1 year difference between Middle and Junior school :?

We have a similar new system here now. I think it's because there are so few places at the schools, and such a massive waiting list for each one. Nursery and First schools seem to be the most problematic. I think that for under 5's the schools have to keep their ratios down as low as possible. We have appiled for a place for Oscar to start in September where the staff to child ratio is 1:4 for under 3's. Then 1:8 for 3-4 year olds, it increases to 1:22 after the age of 7.

I think as shcools are having such an influx of applicants, they're having to find ways to tighten their admissions policies. Here for example, you have to apply for nursery, then reception, then first school, then middle school, and again for secondary school. It's good in a way, as it means that the schools are keeping themselves in check and keeping their ratios low so that each child gets the attention that they need which they wouldn't get if the schools were over-crowded and the schools never refused any apllicants.

Yes I think there are going to be a lot of changes in the next few years in the school system in most places to cope with how oversubcribed a lot of schools are
