I know three year old's that have attended karate classes, but they don't have the attention span or concentration for it. I'd say from 5 upwards, as then they're more likely to follow and understand instructions and appreciate that there is discipline involved and it isn't about hurting people!

I was 6 when I started and Heather was 3. Different karate expect different ages, it depends on whether it is a Kata based type or fight based. We went to Shoto Khan which was all about defence and Kata and very little emphasis on the actual fighting. Also as we got older, our instructor used to take us every week to teach us self defence if we ever got attacked - just us girls though I would love to go back to Karate, but cant find any Shoto Khan classes near me I remember one of the girls we went with, wanted to start fighting in competitions and Mr Russell was horrified - he was totally against her competing as Karate was not meant to hurt people, but to defend yourself. hmmmmmm we were like Mr Miagi from Karate kid xx

Most Martial arts want the children to be 5, I know at Adams Kung Fu they can start at 5 but cant grade until they are 6. Hannah is desperate to start but isnt 5 until Dec and will probably wait until she is 5 and a half.
