anyones child suffer with these horrid things. Im having an awful time with ritchie. It started when i had to go into hospital in jan for an operation and hasnt stopped since. Every single night hes suffering and its scaring the life out of me. At first he seemed to sit bolt upright, shakey and cry/scream, shaking his hands and pointing and talking jibberish. This last for around 10 mins and then im able to settle him so he can sleep soundly.
Lately things have got worse, He is now doing all of the above but wetting himself too. Im at my wits end as it seems there is nothing i can do to comfort or stop this from happening.
Anyone have any advice or been through it with there little one.
Ritchie will be 5 in may. xxxx

How horrible it must be for you both. Sorry I can't help but I think you should see your Hv ASAP, there must be something to help him.

thanks hunnie, im gonna make a gp appointment but i really dont think they can do anything. judging by what it says online kids seem to grow out of them or they tend to become less frequent. its just awful waiting for either to happen. im at my wits end and Ritchie seems to be oblivious to it all. xxxx

My daughter's also 5 in May and she's started having bad dreams, she doesn't get as bad as your son, but I'm hoping hers don't get any worse....they seem to have started all of a sudden and are every night now...I'm just hoping it's something she'll grow out of x x

Rheiya went through a stage of them when she was around the same age. Nothing we could do would help, luckily she never remembered them and she grew out of them.

Hi hun i have tried to find my page on here from last year as Louis was going through the same thing the nightmares were awful.

We saw the hv and doctors and nothing could be done just to reassure him that everything is ok and as i have been through it i know what you are going through and they do grow out of it.hth

thanks everyone for your replies. been to see gp today and he said night terrors are not normal bad dreams. He said the children will seem wide awake, sit upright, sweat and tremble with fear.....all of these symptoms Ritchie has. Bad dreams are a different situation. He also said nothing can be done. Just to make sure he doesnt hurt himself and try not to interfer when its happening as then your voice becomes part of the terror. Never been through anything like this before. Its reassuring knowing that it will stop someday, but very tiring in the meantime. I just hate to see my little boy so destressed. breaks my heart, but i suppose i should be thankful he doesnt remember any of it. xxxxxxx

p.s......gp said night terrors are general heritory, so im blaming hubby lol xxxxx

I know this has been on here a while but thought I would reply. Kayleigh has been having nightmares for a while now. Probably a year and a half (she is 5 now) but definately really bad for the last 6-9 months. Funnily enough after I read the other posts its since she came out of hospital.

She was hospitalised with tonsilitus and ended up with a drip as the back of her throat closed and she couldn't swallow.

She wakes and screams that there are turtles crawling along her floor and points to them and looks at me stupid when I say there is nothing there. She's like "mum can you not see them, they're right in front of you"!. Last night was a man with a gun and the night before that there was a man in her wardrobe and a woman behind her door.

It gets to the stage where you are scared to look as she is freaking me out. Do you think there is something she can see that I can't or do you think it is a phase?

I've had about 4 good nights sleep in the last 18 months and that's because she has stayed out those nights. It's starting to take it's toll on me and Franco as we are absolutely knackered.

Docs or not ladies, will they do anything and will she grow out of it?

If she sleeps in our bed (only done it a couple of times to test and she was fine!). Also gave her Medised a couple of times as she was ill and she never woke up all night. Scared in case I get tempted lol

We've tried:

milk/no milk
tv/no tv
juice/no juice
toast/no toast
light/no light
story/no story
door open/door shut

Any advise ladies before I go grey(er)!!

Amanda (& "I never sleep all night Kayleigh")

Sounds like night terrors too Amanda, even though she is recognising that you are there, the fact that she still seems to be 'seeing things' sounds like she is still in her dream.
Rheiya used to wake up screaming and I'd ask her if she needed the toilet, she'd say no, but I'd get her out of bed anyway (didn't want her waking her sister) and ask her again, she'd say no and would then wet herself, which seemed to 'wake' her and she'd calm down. It didn't happen with every night terror, but when it did she it woke her up which is what I wanted as it is awful to go through and you cannot wake them out of it.
Does she remember any of it in the morning? Rheiya used to have no recollection at all and would be totally confused if she woke wearing different pj trousers!!

Hi Yvonne,

Yeah she remembers every dream. It's weird.

Do you think I should take her to the docs or will they laugh at me??

Amanda
