My mum is great, hands on and enthusiastic and helpful, but doesnt interfere. she is always pleased to see my little boy, and rings every other day, sees him as much as possible. She doesnt get involved with decisions or undermine me, she just supports me.

The MIL on the other hand, is not interested one bit. She has seen him once since he was born, and for a while she didnt even ask about him when she phoned, like he didnt exist. Needless to say this upset my hubby and me loads. When we did visit with him when he was 4 wks old, she didnt acknowledge him at first when we went thru the door, she just complained about all her illnesses! It beggars belief. But she does try and voice her (totally useless) opinion, and has some strange and outdated and sometimes totally dangerous ideas. Its her loss anyway

We have 4 sets as both my mum & dad, and Ally's Mum & Dad are both seperated, and other than Ally's dad they have re-married...

My Mum & Step-dad live in Spain so it means they aren't here most of the time so very hands off 9 months of the year, and then when they come back to England they live with us, and are then very hands on!! They have great intentions and really are great with them most of the time but they are both retired secondary school teachers and at times I think they forget that they are only little and they revert to "teacher" mode which annoys me!!

My Dad & Step Mum are probably the ideal balance - we dont really hear from them that much and they live over an hour away so they never "pop in" but they are always more than happy for me to call them and arrange a visit no matter how long or short. They have a farm and the kids love it there, and my dad loves taking them out on the quad and tractor, and letting them name the calves etc

Allys dad is great - he often just pops in to say hello but never overstays his welome if you know what I mean  He finishes work early so he will often volunteer to pick the kids up for us etc

The children see Allys mum & her partner the least (which is prob a good thing!!) we dont hear from her for months and then she turns up and spends the whole time telling us what we are doing wrong/not doing etc... She is very image focused and a bit of a snob really and she gets on my t**s to be honest!!! We had Joshua Christening party at my dads and even though she had never been there before she started showing her friends around all of the house and then moaning that the bed rooms wern't tidy enough for 'tours' and I even heard her say "Yes, As Elizabeth is an only child, My Alastair will inherit all of this one day!!" oh, and when I was pregnant with Izzy they came to our house for Christmas Eve dinner and she told my mum I was spoiling her sons life by making him have 'that baby'!!!
