Just wondered what people's opinion were on kids being at their siblings births.

My older three are 9, 8 and 6 and were all present when their baby brother was born a fortnight ago.

The 8 year old had been asking for months and I had said she could be there if she wanted as long as he was born at home and that she wasn't in school as I wouldn't go get her for it (as it happened he was born at half term but just before 6pm) and had warned her there would be blood, mummy might shout (didn't) and the baby may need help to start breathing (he didn't) and that if she changed her mind she could.

The 9 year old said she didn't want to be anything 'icky' and the 6 year old wasn't sure.

In the end all three of them kept coming and poking their heads round the corner and stayed put once they saw the head.

9 year old not phased in the slightest, 8 year old has now decided she definately wants to have a baby (dh said I should have made it look harder as it didn't put her off) and the 6 year old was more interested in the placenta.

I am glad they were there as it did seem right for us as a family - even though it's not something I would have particularly suggested for them to come and do, it was their choice to be there

ah what a lovely post. I hadnt even thought about it, I guess your 3 were old enough to make their own decisions and hopefully the precious memories will stay with them forever. x

I had thought about it when I was pregnant with Jack, and if it had happened quickly in the house, then I don't think I would mind the children watching (although they would have got a BIG shock as they think he came out of my bellybutton), but I did not plan to have them there - only if it had happened quick. In the end, I was induced, so was at the hospital anyway.
