Post subject:  How do I choose a high chair for weaning?

Hi, My hubbie and I plan to go out for a browse of high chairs this weekend. Lara is 4 months now and is definitely beginning to show signs of wanting more than just milk.

Does anybody have any recommendations of what we should be looking for in a first high-chair? I just don't know what the pitfalls are as I've not had much contact with weaning babies before (like, none)!

I think most of them aren't suitable until 6 months so I'd be interested to hear of any that are (although Lara is already pretty upright so it won't be long before she can go in one). Are there any that are really easy (and hard-wearing enough) to put up and down? or should I go for a freestanding one?

Also, I've seen these washable mats to put on the floor underneath - do I need one of those?

Any shopping tips would be appreciated.

Hi!

The first high chair we bought for our little one was a wooden one from Mothercare that converts into a table and chair for when their older: which enables you to use it for a long time and for other purposes (drawing etc) too. Brilliant we thought, until Oscar was 6 months old! Oscar had started crawling when he was 4 months old and could hold his head up perfectly from around 2 months. Anyway, by 6 months he was into everything and I soon found out that I had to stay within arms reach of him in his chair, as there was no harness and he could easily escape out of it. He could stand up in it AND knew to slip down onto the floor! Also, he liked to rock in his chair and has always been really strong. Once, when Oscar was 7 months old, my partner walked but 3 feet away from Oscar in his chair and Oscar managed to rock it so hard that he rocked the whole thing back into the TV behind him and forward again onto the sofa!

So my advice to you is to get a high chair with a 5 point harness to strap her in and one with splayed legs to elimininate the possibility of rocking!

As for the mat, we have wooden floors in the kitchen and living room, so cleaning up mess is pretty quick and easy it may be an idea if you have carpets though and plan to feed in the living room. as weaning can be a VERY messy affair!

Happy weaning!

i have a chico happysnack, its now seen my two children through weaning eldest from 17wks and its still going strong for lola whos 10mnths, it has a slight recline if theyre tired i found my two would slump in the chair and eating 'real food' is tiring! It folds up, not really small but enough!

Look for an easy clean one, not many grooves, or like mine i can chuck the cover and straps in the machine!

Might not be essential for any one else but i swear by the 'pommel' in ours, basically the chunky plastic post between there legs stopped a crazy toddle escaping and keeps dd from slipping on tired days!

My BIGGEST tip is, when browsing grab a kids plate and try it on trays, We brought one and NO plates fit and barely a bowl, useless, we sold that one quickly!

Thanks - I can't believe how useful that has been. Am going shopping in an hour and will go armed with a plate!

Im weaning Lewis at the minute and hes 5 months, so not quite fully supporting his back to be able to sit in a highchair.
When I went to the baby weaning classes they recommended that until he has got a bit more support in his back, that rather than using a highchair I should feed him in his little chair. I set it so it cant move so its not bouncing while hes trying to eat lol  , and hes great in there.

Good luck :D

I'm another fan of the Happysnack. We had one for Arthur,he was still using it till he was three and a half.
We bought a wooden country style chair for the next one. It's nice too,but too upright for a little one and the tray's too small.Looks pretty and it's easy to clean.
My latest highchair is a DO NOT BUY.It cost £90 it's Bruin,ToysR Us's own.It looked good,it reclines for a little one.It has five point harness, wide base, huge tray which has two layers.Adjustable heights, folds away if you need to.Those things were all good.BUT the cover split within 3 months, the upright position is too reclined, the inner seems are taped with fabric(filthy germ traps)the straps were too low,and the tray has a release catch just in the right place for little ones to kick it,sending their tray and dinner flying.I'm currently using it with no seat pad cos once it's split you can't keep it clean.
I'd hate for anyone to spend the extra on what looks like a nice chair, only to be disappointed.I should've just stuck to the happysnack

Hi yourjumbly

Hope you found a good highchair.

We've just started weaning our 5 and a half month old this week, and currently feed him in his bumbo or bouncy chair. His highchair is a cheap version of a trip trapp one, so he can join us at the dining table. I'll move him to his highchair when he can pick up and eat bits of food alongside me feeding the purees (in a couple of months).

Our highchair only has a three point harness though, so I've got an additional harness for it.

We have easily wipeable wooden floors (and I'm not houseproud!!) so don't bother with a wipe clean mat. I would if I had a carpet though - it can be a messy business.

Good luck!

Hi all, just thought I would update you. We went shopping on saturday and looked at loads of high chairs but couldn't find any high enough for our table. We ummed and aaahed and then gave up and went shopping for chinese food instead!

In the end I bought a second hand happy snack thats as good as new from a local woman for a bargain £20 and so far so good. Lara seems to be able to sit upright in it.

If you'd like to read the full story it is on my baby blog on this site....

Thanks all.
