Learnt from a teacher friend today that they are no longer allowed to send children home if they have head lice as they are not ill - so headlice is an endless problem, particularly as some parents refuse to acknowledge the problem and take action so their kids constantly re-infect everyone else. (Not sure if this is a standpoint all schools have to adopt).

I think kids with headlice should be sent home in an effort to control the condition.

I think they should be sent home and their parents should do everything to get rid of this problem.

luckly touch wood boys never had them there is very short
but the is a family in the school
who everyone know there kids are the ones who bring it to school as do the teachers
but parents never to seem to do nothing about it

it cant be nice for the kids scratching and stuff and there oldest is 7 now other kids will pick up on it soon

No I don't believe the child should be sent home. Why risk humiliating a child in front of the rest of the class for a failing of their parents. Far better a letter home at the end of the day mentioning that the child has an infestation and needs treating before returning to school.

thought this had been in place a couple of years and basically they are supposed to send out a generalised letter to ask everyone to be aware and treat so that nobody knows who has them iykwim.
I dont think they should be sent home and to be honest some parents even if kids do come home will do nothing about it.

I don't think they should be set home either. It's not the childs fault. I know it must be horrible but I think a lot of schools send letters out very regularly telling parents they are about & to look out for them & treat them. Unfortunatley they are becoming more & more rife now because they are becoming immune to all the lotions etc that are on the market.

Yes it has (or at least it was at the nursery we used to use). I remember being refused into the nursery one morning because my youngest had nits - but the next time she got them I was informed but told they didn't send children home any more.

I dont think that the child should be sent home as it can be very embarissing them. The parents should deffinately be made aware though! What every happened to the nit nurse?

We have a nit nurse at our childrens school. At the beginning of the school year a letter is sent home with each child informing the parents that unless they wrote in objecting to their child having regular examinations it would be assumed that they consented. We got a letter home after DD had had chicken pox and her poor scabby head was too sore to treat but at that point 14 out of 30 in her class had it and even the teacher was infested.

No, I don't think they should be sent home but the parents should be told.
A teacher at our school told us that she had been told that if a teacher saw a child with head lice, they shouldn't inform the parents because it was against the child's human rights! The parnets went mad!! Now if a child has head lice the parent is discretly told and all the children in the class get a letter home.
It is a huge problem and very annoying but isn't an 'illness' so they shouldn't be forced to miss school because of it.
