Ok I live in a village and we have a lovely local town full of gift shops, charity shops and 50p shops! lol
A WELL KNOWN supermarket chain have been trying to get a store here for more than 15yrs, and months ago they finally got the yes they wanted. :D
The council were against it so its caused alot of aggro!

I personally wanted the store as we have to travel 10miles to get to our nearest supermarket!
92% of people voted yes for the store!

Anyway what I want to know is 'do you think there are too many supermarket chains ruining small towns across the country??'

DISCUSS!

I personally hate Tesco as I think they're immoral and moronic. Their cheap prices are a false economy as their fresh produce is so poor it never lasts! Bananas from Waitrose are still edible days after purchase. Bananas from Tesco on the other hand, barely last 2 days before they're rotten.

I'll stop my rant now.

Saying that though, if your local Tesco is anything like the one in Hunstanton, it'll be a good thing. Hunstanton's stock local produce. :D

As you may know, I work for the titled store.
In my mums town, tesco asked for planning permission to build a mega store. They were refused. It went on for ages, and tesco said that if they got permission they would build a new multistorey carpark and bus station for a different area of the town. They finally got permission, and now they have went back on their word and won't build what they promised.

Yes Audrey, they are building our town a new firestation, new community centre and housing the people who lived in the block of flats! They also funded a new roundabout!

I like tesco. Living in EK was once run by Safeways. No other supermarket was allowed to build in the town as Safeways had the full ownership of the town. A deal that was apparently struck with the old development corporation and could never be removed even though the development corporation was disbanded when we became a part of South Lanarkshire Council. (originally we used to be part of Strathclyde region and each area had their own development corporation)They got bought over by Morrisons, and their stronghold has finally been shifted. We now have 2 Morrisons and 2 Sainsburys. Asda have been trying for about 5 years to take over a derelict piece of land and Tesco have joined the fight for the same piece of land. It is a fair distance away from the existing supermarkets - but still getting refused by Morrisons!!!! I hate not having the choice as dont like either Morrisons or Sainsburys. My nearest Asda is Blantyre (where I used to live) and is a dive. You do run the risk on returning to your car to find no wheels  Our nearest TESCO is Dalmarnock. Each of these areas are 5-10 miles away from my house, so nipping to the shops is awful. I do most of my shopping in Asda or Tesco. Also only Asda and Tesco do 24 hour shopping, so it is a pain in the neck to get to them to get shopping done after we have fed the twins and got them to bed. grrrrrrr
xx

^what she said on the Safeway front

We have a Sainsburys now and I love it! Used to have to travel to Wishaw for Tesco, Hamilton for Asda, Sainsburys & Morrisons or EK for Morrisons & Sainsburys. Can't stand Asda, hate Morrisons with a vengance. Went to one when they were doing the 6p off fuel and wanted to give up half way round!!)
Went to Asda the other week 'for a change' and spent more than I normally do in Sainsburys!!! I'm sticking with Sainsburys for the moment anyway! Asda & Tesco have been given the go ahead to build in Larkhall (6 miles away) so once they have appeared there I might pop along for a nose and see if it's just the Hamilton Asda store that I can't stand! Between the two I foresee Tesco making the most money in that town! As Fi will no doubt agree  Larkhall is the town that managed to get Lloyds Pharmacy to change it's shop front to blue & white as people refused to use it when it was green & white. Yes sectarianism is as strong as anything in Larkhall! So me thinks the red, white & blue of Tesco will go down much better that the green & white of Asda

As for the original question, our small town hasn't been ruined by Sainsburys. When it was built it was agreed there would be no cafe in it, bakery section would be small as would the fish & butcher counters and it would open and close at set times so that the local shops still survived. Only shop that is quieter in the town is Scotmid and they were crap to begin with! Rumour is that Scotmid is closing and Lidl is moving in.
