I am not sure if your friend is getting baby blues mixed up with post natal depression, as they are two totally different things. "baby blues" are what alot of people refer to as the few days after your baby is born when your hormone levels "dip" and cause a rush or feelings and possible anxieties. This is completely normal, but it doesnt happen to everyone, I think it is estimated that about 60 percent of new mums experience it. However, it does pass after a few days. Anything longer and more sustained than that needs to be checked as it could be post-natal depression, and as we know this is a serious, but treatable illness.
I also suffer from depression, but didnt have post natal hon. Try not to stress too much about it, but if heaven forbid you do feel it, then make sure you talk to those you love and trust and you will be fine. :D x

Personally, I think your friend should know better if she has been through it. It isn't true at all. Women experience a whole variety of emotions and feelings immediately after the birth, but no 2 women will react to it in the same way. Just as pregnancy is different for everyone, so too is the post-partum period. As Vickie said, baby blues are common, but it is a result of the hormones levelling out and the biological changes your body goes through after pregnancy. The baby blues are considered a normal part of early motherhood and usually go away within 10 days after delivery, however, Postnatal depression is COMPLETELY different. The latter is an illness, like diabetes or heart disease and has a variety of different causes. If you do suffer from Depression now, is does not mean you will definitely get Postnatal depression too, for many reasons.

Do not worry about it at all. Everyone responds to the biological changes after birth very differently from one another. If it happened to your friend, it doesn't mean it will happen to you too.

I don't think there are many new mums out there that can say they didn't feel at all overwhelmed when their baby arrived but that doesn't necessarily mean it will develop into postnatal depression.

I developed postnatal depression when Ethan was around three weeks old. He's now six months old and I am slowly starting to feel like my old self again. From what your friend is saying, it sounds like she may be suffering from postnatal depression without realising the extent of her feelings. If this is the case, I hope someone close to her has realised this and tried in some way, to help. That doesn't mean however, that the same will happen to you. everyone experiences different emotions and whilst it will be hard at times (and quite draining) there is no reason why believe postnatal depression is inevitable, so try not to worry and just look forward to your new arrival x
