Did anyone see that documentary on "tonight" last night?
It was about the man who retaliated and attacked burglars when they entered his home and threatened his family. He was jailed for it, as the courts said he had "taken revenge" as opposed to just defending his family and home, that he had "actively" caused them harm.
Now I dont know what you all think of this, but I am of the opinion that if someone enters my home and threatens my family and their safety, then my instinct would be to defend them, no matter what the consequences. Its a "fight or flight" instinct surely?
his jail term was overturned, but not before he had spent 4 years in jail.
How do you feel about this? Are we living in a nanny state full of do-gooders, or do you take the view that he went too far? What about our rights? Do the criminals have more rights than us law-abiding citizens?

How far would I go??? I would hazard a guess I'd kill some no-mark if they broke in here and my boys lives were at risk, sod the prison sentance.
I think we do live in a world where criminals seem to get more justice. Years ago,Someone broke into my flat and my then dog attacked him, biting his leg which resulted in 62 stitches, whilst I hit him with a bat,the result,he got a suspended sentance, attempted to sue me,but sadly dutchess had to be put to sleep.
I actually left the area with the dog to try and avoid this, but sadly I couldn't hide forever.
The dogs I have kept since then would all have done the same, but this time my house is plastered with "beware of the dog" signs, and enter at own risk etc...... It was that technicality he tried to sue me over. After this, I would do it again, I worked hard payed for things, why should someone just come in and take stuff????
He claimed to be"desperate". We've all been desperate, skint, low etc....we just don't rob someone when we hit a bad patch. I have since seen him around the area I used to live (friends are still there) Can't print our conversations, but he's walking the streets large as life,a menace to the community. I'm sorry but I think everyone has the right to defend their home, and family with any force or means necessary.

Rant over!

I would fight to the bitter end to save my family! Anyone who broke into my house wouldn't stand a chance in hell! The law is basically saying go into whoevers house and do what you want, ITS WRONG! I would do whatever needed done! Criminals need punished not us in our homes! It's makes me so angry!X x

I didn't see it Vickie, but I do think we live in a strange country sometimes! Why the Hell should any kind of criminal be able to sue people for things that happen to them whilst they are breaking the law? It's absolutely nuts!!!!

If someone were to break into MY home, where MY kids live, sleep, play & expect not to get any retaliation from me or Ste then they're living in a fantasy world! I would stop at NOTHING to protect my family. I am sure any of us would. The law needs changing!

I didnt see this documentary but i think the law is discusting!!
i think anyone in a situation where their family are at risk would do what ever neccessary to protect them!! I dont see why people who go out of there way to break into someones home and attempt/threaten to cause harm to the people inside are being protected.do the people who give these sentences not have a family?do they not have items in their house they have worked hard for? most importantly would they not protect their loved 1s and the life they have worked hard to build??....
it just makes no sence!!

I didnt see this either.

Still though I dont think the law is right. Everybody has the flight or fight instinct in them and I think that when it comes to defending your family the fight instinct comes in. Its natural really.

I would do anything necessary to protect my family and Im sure Im not the only one.
