Dozens of some of the biggest-selling toys from Fisher-Price are being recalled in a lead paint scare. The move follows the discovery of problems with a number of character-based products marketed for children as young as two years old. The company has recalled 83 types of Chinese-made toys because their paint contains excessive amounts of lead.
Parent company Mattel said no injuries had occurred as a result of the sales, but urged parents to stop children using the affected toys immediately. In all, more than 94,000 units of the problem toys have gone on sale in stores across the UK and the Irish Republic.
The global move involves nearly one million plastic pre-school toys, including popular characters from children's TV shows Dora The Explorer and Lazy Town. It is the latest in a wave of recalls that has heightened global concern about the safety of Chinese-made products. But it is the first for Fisher-Price and Mattel involving lead paint.
In 1998, Fisher-Price had to pull about 10 million Power Wheels toys from stores. Fisher-Price general manager David Allmark said the problem had been detected by an internal probe and reported to the Consumer Product Safety Commission in the US.
The recall is particularly alarming since Mattel, known for its strict quality controls, is considered a role model in the toy industry for how it operates in China.
Fisher-Price said parents should keep suspect toys away from children and contact the company.
The products that are affected in the UK are:

Dora Talking Vamonos Van
Dora Pals
Dora Let's Go Adventure
Dora's Talking House Deluxe
Dora Mini Playset
Diego Talking Field Journal
