Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton has apologised to Lisa Bertelsen, 33, after telling her that her miscarried baby had been cremated when it should have given her the option to take the 'baby' home. The grieving mum had planned a blessing service before told of the 'cremation'. In point of fact, the hospital actually kept the foetus in a laboratory.
Mark Hackett, chief executive of the trust, wrote to Ms Bertelsen to "apologise unreservedly" for the "pain and distress" the appalling mistake had caused her.
"Staff training is now being updated to ensure that members of staff are fully aware of the importance of sensitive and professional care around bereavement and have full knowledge of all the options that are available to a parent in these sad circumstances." Mr. Hackett also referred to "a breakdown in the usual procedures that are carried out after a baby has died".
Ms Bertelsen only found out about the mistake months after her miscarriage in December last year when the hospital told her it still had the foetus in its pathology department. It is understood the hospital has paid for a burial plot for Ms Bertelsen's foetus.
In statement on Tuesday, Mr Hackett went on to say: "It is important to reassure women who suffer a miscarriage that everything is in place to ensure disposal is dealt with promptly and properly.
