Health experts claim that parents are creating unnecessary skin problems for their babies by bathing them every day! More than one in three babies - 37 per cent of boys and 33 per cent of girls - now suffer from sensitive skin. It is thought that over bathing and the use of chemicals is the biggest culprit.
Despite Department of Health advice, most babies are bathed at least once a day, and one in five "every other day". Health professionals say that it is only necessary for babies to be bathed two or three times a week and for face, neck, hands and bottom to be cleaned each day.
A UK survey of more than 2,000 parents found that of the babies suffering from skin problems, four out of ten suffered from eczema - with 6 per cent suffering "very badly".
Most parents of children with sensitive skin said their child suffered rashes, itching or flaking, blisters and unsettled sleep.
More than half of mothers said they only used products designed for baby, including fabric softener, but the poll found that most parents regularly used antiseptic wipes on their child's hands and faces. However, only 23 per cent use "plain water", despite recommendations from midwives.
And despite parents' concern for cleanliness, a disturbingly low percentage - just over a third - regularly used sunscreen on their children.
