Bullet Paula Radcliffe's Labour Pain
She's famous for her ability to endure incredible physical pain during her marathon sprints, but Olympic medallist Paula Radcliffe says she wasn't prepared for the pain of labour.

In an interview with The Sun Newspaper, Paula talks about her 26-hour labour with her daughter Isla. ' I am used to handling pain and when I’m running my body works with me and things happen fast. But during the labour my body was blocking Isla at every turn.'
After a day of painful labour, Paula was told that her perineal muscles were too tight; 'then Isla got stuck on my coccyx bone so we had to try different positions to get her past that. Finally, I was told my pelvic bones were too close — Isla’s head was 10.3cm and they were 10.1cm — so in the end I had an episiotomy and a ventouse.
She says she's determined to breastfeed little Isla as long as she can; ' She’s doing really well on it and I don’t want to stop until she’s on solids. It’s the first time in my life I appreciate the need for a sports bra!'

A study commissioned to launch Persil National Washing Up Week found that only 1% of families expect their children to help with the washing up. The survey of almost 1500 people found that mums (and it is women in 70% of households that do most of the washing up) spend on average almost seven days every year slaving away doing the dishes!

Bullet Child abandoned three hours after hospital opens 'baby hatch'. Just three hours after opening a controversial 'baby hatch' allowing parents to abandon babies more safely, a Japanese hospital attracted its first abandoned child. A father walked into the hospital in Kumamoto and left his four-year-old son. The baby hatch is a 45 by 65 cm drawer in the wall of the hospital where parents of newborns can abandon their babies safely! It was first introduced in hospitals in Germany. The Japanese authorities are now trying to find the boy's father.

Bullet Johnny Depp has been speaking for the first time about how his daughter Lily-Rose survived a near-fatal poisoning from E Coli. Lily-Rose was admitted to a London hospital after the infection caused her kidneys to shut down.
The Pirates of the Caribbean actor said in The Mirror....'It gave us a great scare but what got us through this wasn't the strength of Vanessa or me but our daughter and her incredible ability to make us feel OK even though she was very unwell. She was super-strong.
It was a very bumpy patch but she has come through it beautifully and unscathed and she is now as healthy as she always was. She is wonderful. It was a reminder to us of how lucky we are to be able to breathe, walk, talk, think and surround ourselves with people we love.' Her illness spurred Johnny on to eventually put the seal on marrying his long-term partner Vanessa Paradis!

Bullet A journalist at the Times, Alice Miles, has been moaning about the fact that so few of the writers commentating on current affairs in newspapers are women. She says that when she goes looking for intelligent debate by women, the only place she can find it is on parenting websites. She believes that Mums are wasting their time by focusing so much on motherhood and parenting issues. She says 'If a woman has time to discuss her nursery or the relative merits of the different sippy cups, then she has time to post a comment on the failings of the school system or whether we should pull out of Iraq.' Miles goes on to say she would love to see parenting websites lead debates but she thinks that such sites think that Mums are too busy changing nappies to be bothered with changing the world! How ridiculous! TheBabyWebsite knows without asking that you all care about the wider world issues etc., but we all have priorities and what could be more important than caring about the way you're parenting the future?
