Parent Power Wins The Day

Tommy’s Parent Friendly Awards reveal the companies offering the best products and services to mums and dads.

Celebrities including Nancy Sorrell, Tamara Beckwith and Tania Bryer gathered at Claridge’s Hotel on Friday 30th March, to announce the winners of the 2007 Parent Friendly Awards, hosted by Tommy’s, the baby charity.

The star-studded awards ceremony announced which companies parents have voted best at providing an excellent product or service for them. The aim of the Awards is to improve the overall standard of facilities on offer, to ensure that parents’ lives are less stressful.

Just over half a million votes were cast by parents up and down the country during February 2007, in 19 categories including Best Supermarket, Best Family Restaurant and Best High Street Retailer. For the third year running, the ceremony also included the Tommy’s Angel Award (sponsored by Tesco) – which doesn’t go to a company – but to an individual who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to help someone with a pregnancy or parenting problem.

Long standing Tommy’s supporter Tania Bryer, presented the Tommy’s Angel Award to winner Colin Higgerson who was nominated by his wife Claire for his support during her years of IVF treatment and subsequent twin pregnancy. At just 23 weeks their sons George and Noah were born, weighing just under and just over a pound respectively. Sadly, little George died after just four days in hospital but Noah survived and today is his parents’ little angel.

Tania Bryer hosted the ceremony and she was joined by: Tamara Beckwith, Floella Benjamin, Nancy Sorrell, Faith Brown, Carol Decker, Haydn Gwynne, Catherine Gee, Dr Miriam Stoppard and Philippa Forrester – who all presented awards.

The Awards, which have been running for twelve years, credit companies that are taking parents’ needs into consideration, and helping to make their lives a little easier whilst out and about. A recent Tommy’s survey revealed that a shocking 70% of people still think that children should be seen and not heard in public places. The survey also highlighted the lack of parent/baby facilities in the UK and the negative attitude of the travelling public towards parents with young children. Tommy’s Parent Friendly Awards are clearly an important catalyst to ensure that more companies do the best by parents and provide them with the services they so desperately need.

Jane Brewin, Chief Executive of Tommy’s, says: “We are proud to be able to reward the most parent friendly organisations that are giving parents and parents-to-be a helping hand. There’s still a lot more that can be done to make Britain more parent friendly but so far, Tommy’s have rewarded over 150 companies in the UK with a Parent Friendly Award and we would like to think we’re driving best practice, encouraging more companies to follow suit”.
