All women are offered scans and tests when they are pregnant. These scans and screening tests will show you and your doctor or midwife how your baby is developing.
Ultrasound scansWhen you go for an ultrasound scan, a hand-held scanning device will be rolled over your stomach. Images from inside your womb will be shown on a screen. Sometimes you will be able to take a photo of your scan home to show people your as yet unborn baby.
Ultrasound Scans are used to:
1.Determine the age and size of your baby
2.Check the position of the baby and placenta
3.Check the baby or placenta for any physical problems
4.Find out if you are expecting twins or even more!
5.Find out the baby's gender. (Although this isn't always possible.)
You will normally be offered a scan at around eight to 14 weeks pregnant and again at around the 18 to 20 weeks stageScreening TestsScreening tests are used to check for conditions like Down's Syndrome and Spina Bifida. If your hospital offers you a screening test, you should check with your midwife why you are being offered the test. All women regardless of age can be tested for spina bifida and Down's syndrome, however, older mothers are at greater risk of having a baby with Down's syndrome.
