Fern Britton is UK's Most Popular Mother

Fern Britton has emerged as the nation’s ideal mother, according to new research from Hallmark Cards aimed at finding role models for new mums. The TV presenter gained more than a third of votes while fame and glamour are out of favour with style-icon Victoria Beckham gaining only 3% of the votes and leading barrister and wife of the PM, Cherie Blaire with just 2%.

Hallmark, conducted the research as part of its 2007 Mother’s Day celebrations and with support from Olympic hurdling legend and mother of three, Sally Gunnell, is calling for families to make the day extra special for first time mums.

It forms part of their Cards for a Cure™ campaign that will see the company contribute £1/4million to two Breast Cancer Charities – a disease affecting thousands of women everywhere. All Hallmark Mother’s Day cards will have the internationally recognisable pink ribbon on the front of every card.

The findings also reveal the countries hopes and dreams for children growing up. 80% of people saw the world as an increasingly worrying and dangerous place to bring up children. The majority of people (37%) wanted to see their children grow up to be good parents. Just 1% said they wanted their children to become famous while 3% said they wanted them to be wealthier than them.

People were also asked what careers they wanted their children to have. A doctor or nurse was the most popular future choice with 24% of votes, lawyer came second with 14% and just 2% wanted their children to become a politician.

Sally Gunnell, said: “Fern Britton is a fantastic role model for mothers and it is refreshing to see people rejecting unrealistic expectations for their children such as fame or wealth. Hallmark’s support of the Breast Cancer Campaign is the perfect way to show its support to women – and mothers – everywhere.”

Hallmarks donation to Breast Cancer Charities is being made independently of card sales. It will be contributing £225,000 to Breast Cancer Campaign in the UK and £25,000 to Action Breast Cancer in Ireland.
