FSID was founded in 1971 by a grandmother desperate to understand why her grandson died totally unexpectedly. Since then, they have funded over £9million of research to find out why babies die from cot death and have identified key steps to reduce this risk, especially putting babies to sleep on their backs.
The 1991 'Reduce the Risk ' national campaign took baby safety advice to thousands of parents and health professionals and contributed to a reduction in cot death by a staggering 75% saving over 15,000 babies ' lives. However, over 300 babies still die from cot death each year in the UK. Yet almost 75% of deaths could be prevented if people had correct baby safety information. This is why it is so important to continue researching cot death and to communicate these findings to parents to save them the heartbreak of losing a baby.
Families who have lost a baby can rely on the many support networks we have - they can call FSID trained helpline advisors and take advantage of our befriender network. Befrienders are themselves bereaved parents/grandparents so have a unique understanding of how bereaved parents feel, and offer informal support in addition to the helpline.
