Nasal Congestion
Congestion is very common in babies, especially those under 6 months old; often beginning in the first few weeks following birth. Breathing difficulty due to congestion is a common reason for hospital referral in newborn babies. A baby’s blocked nose is often due to colds and the average infant gets six to eight colds each year for the first two or three years. Other causes include dust, pollution and other environmental allergies to which a young baby’s respiratory system is not yet accustomed.
Babies naturally breathe through the nose rather than the mouth (they are known as obligate breathers).
