Scrubbing Up Nicely
Beauty editor Kim Jones recommends shower scrubs to shake up your morning routine ...
Exfoliating all over might be one of the best routes to ridding your body of dead skin cells and revealing the soft, glowing skin underneath – but, boy, is it a great way to help you wake up, too!
I reach for a body scrub in place of my usual shower gel a couple of mornings a week when I feel extra sleepy. Scrubbing in circular motions wakes up your skin’s zing, and, if you choose a shower scrub with a gorgeous, uplifting fragrance, it can really lighten your mood, too, helping you to face the day, no matter how tired you feel.
Just like exfoliating your face, body exfoliation also preps your skin for any body lotions you apply afterwards but it also helps prevent clogged pores, which can cause pimples.
Pay particular attention to rough spots like heels, elbows and knees, and within a couple of weeks, you’ll see a real improvement in all your dry patches.
Here’s a round-up of my current favourite shower scrubs which help wake up sluggish bodies and minds. Because you only need to use them a couple of times a week, they last a long time, so go on…treat yourself to something special...
Lush Rub Rub Rub£8.25, www.lush.co.uk
If you look past the alarming blue colour of this scrub, I’d say it’s pretty near perfect! A scrumptious mix of fine sea salt (harvested from the shores of Spain, no less) with organic lemon juice, lemon oil and the divine scents of Jasmine and Orange Flowers plus mimosa, it scrubs away sluggishness and leaves all limbs soft and well-oiled. What’s more, you can also use it to wash your hair. Genius.
Kiehl’s Gentle Exfoliating Body ScrubGrapefruit, £22.50, www.kiehls.com
This gorgeous creamy formula is perfect for drier skins. With natural loofah, it’s gentle but effective at sloughing away dead skin, and the ‘soft-citrus’ fragrance works a treat at waking up a weary mind.
Burt’s Bees Cranberry & Pomegranate Sugar Scrub£12.99, www.burtsbees.co.uk
I love a scrub that comes in a pot. It means you can really dig in and slop it on. This lovely concoction is a sweet blend of fruits and sugar that’s delightfully thick and gooey and treats skin to nourishing shea butter and natural fruit oils which leave it glowing.
L’Occitane Amande Shower Scrub, £18, www.ukloccitane.com
This gentle jelly formulation contains crushed almond shell powder for exfoliation and a gorgeous delicate almond fragrance. So soft on the skin, it’s suitable for daily use.
Sothy’s Relaxing Body Scrub, Cherry Blossom and Lotus Escape, £36, www.sothys-uk.co.uk
For a touch of Parisian luxury, this indulgent iridescent gel scrub envelops the skin with a floral, powdery scent that lingers on the limbs long after your shower. A real sophisticated body treat.
Cowshed Knackered Cow Relaxing Shower Scrub
The Cowshed range of body scrubs are so clever – they tailor make each scrub with the appropriate essential oils and exfoliating particles to suit your mood (Grumpy, Moody, Wild). For a Knackered Cow (like most of us mums tend to be from time to time) this contains a mix of essential oils of lavender (to quietly soothe) and eucalyptus (to gently uplift) with soft Acai fruit particles to lightly exfoliate. The gel to cream formula feels gorgeous on the skin too.
There. We scrub up pretty well, I think
