Hurrapatriotismus

As we're smack bang in the middle of The World Cup in Germany, this week's Word of the Week is a German word!

Hurrapatriotismus

Most dictionaries translate Hurrapatriotismus as jingoism - excessive patriotism or aggressive nationalism esp. as regards foreign policy.

We like Andrew Hammel's definition....'rah-rah patriotism'!

He describes Hurrapatriotismus as 'a blind, reckless, willful extolling of the virtues of one's country at the expense of all (or certain) others'.

Up until the World Cup, there seemed to be very little of it left in Germany.
Now however, everyone's talking about the "new patriotism" and nationalistic fervour in Germany. 'The Man on the Street' is showing the flag because he's supporting the team he's (she's?) so proud of. Germans are also, naturally, proud that the World Cup is taking place in Germany. Hardly a crime!
Sentimental Patriotism, more like!

There was a time when German people of all ages were almost ashamed of being German because of their history. Fortunately now, although their history is kept in mind, they don't regard their responsibilities as a burden any more!

So what do they do? They let down their hair and cheer for their team and what happens......? Over-the-top 'comments' about flag-waving and anthem-singing in the International Press as well as criticism from Germans themselves...afraid of how their 'patriotism' will be perceived! It's allowed for other countries but not for Germany......Ridiculous!

Once the World Cup is done and dusted, the flags will come down and.......back to normal!
