Perfect Pancakes All Year Round

Perfect Pancakes All Year Round
Who says pancakes should just be restricted to Pancake Day aka Shrove Tuesday?

The truth is that the humble pancake can be created from ingredients that you are likely to have in your fridge at any time of year, and is incredibly versatile.

Choose between English-style pancakes, which tend to be wider and thinner, or American-style, where a raising agent such as baking powder is used, and the pancakes themselves are fatter (more like a drop scone).

On Shrove Tuesday, we normally eat pancakes served simply with a sprinkling of lemon and sugar - or, in some cases, chocolate sauce or spread. (Chocolate and banana is pretty much a perfect combination.)

There are lots of alternatives, though: whether you like your pancakes savoury or sweet, or for breakfast, as a main course or as a dessert.

Breakfast pancakes are more of an American tradition, but one that's becoming increasingly popular over here. American-style pancakes make a great breakfast food, and can be as healthy or as unhealthy as you like, depending on the toppings that you choose!

How To Make Perfect Pancakes

For the healthy option, serve with fruit such as blueberries, raspberries or bananas. You could add a little natural yoghurt to serve - or if you want to mix both naughty and nice, drizzle with golden syrup or honey. If a slightly unhealthier option is more your thing, you can't go wrong with American-style pancakes drizzled in maple syrup and served with crispy bacon - a real weekend treat!

If you are looking for an impressive dessert, why not try Crêpes Suzette? It may be retro, but the boozy orange sauce always goes down a treat, and looks stunning if you decide to flame the pancakes while serving.

You could even make a pancake cake as a simple but great-looking dessert option. Simply make up your pancakes, and layer with ingredients to suit you - you could choose cinnamon sugar, chocolate spread, fresh fruit and cream or any number of different options...it's always fun to experiment.

Savoury pancakes are also an easy and delicious treat. They can either be served flat with toppings such as ham and cheese sauce, or rolled up, cannelloni-style, with a variety of fillings before being baked. You could try chicken, leek and cheese for an indulgent meal, or stuff with butternut squash and Stilton for a vegetarian option. Alternatively, consider Irish boxty pancakes as your carbohydrate to accompany a cooked breakfast, in the place of slices of toast, fried bread or hash browns.

However you serve your pancakes, the important thing to ensure is that you master the basic recipe. Once you can make the perfect pancake, the world is your oyster - you can experiment with just about any type of filling, whether sweet or savoury! Take a look at the Schwartz website, which offers a great guide to making the basic pancake recipe - as well as some suggestions for delicious fillings and toppings.
