Gas and Air is sometimes known as Entonox. So what is Gas and Air? What is Entonox? Gas and Air aka Entonox is an odourless and colourless gas made up of half oxygen and half nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, as it is more commonly known. Gas and Air tends to have a calming effect and although it doesn't block out the pain out completely, it certainly takes the edge off labour pain. Some women find themselves laughing others feel like the're floating. It seems to be different for everyone! Gas and air should be available wherever you choose to give birth, whether it is in a hospital, a birth centre or at home. The vast majority of hospitals pump gas and air to the labour wards from a central supply, so it's always available whenever you want it. If you happen to be in a smaller hospital without a central supply, or if you're having a home birth, your midwife will bring the gas and air to you in portable cylinders.
