A Family Holiday in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a fantastic place to visit for a family holiday and there are lots of things in the Asian country to see and do with the little ones.

A trip to the Sinnawela Elephant Orphanage could make for a great family day out. Located to the north-west of the town of Kegalle, this wildlife sanctuary serves as a breeding ground and orphanage for wild elephants. By visiting the park, you can get an insight into these beautiful creatures' day-to-day routine, including bathing and feeding, and find out how they are cared for. You will have to pay admission, but this money goes towards supporting the elephants.

Water babies will have lots of fun at Leisure World. This water park, situated in the Seethawaka region of Sri Lanka, has several pools, slides and a log flume so there should be plenty of opportunity for kids to splash around and enjoy themselves. However, if you don't fancy getting wet on your holiday in Sri Lanka, Leisure World is still a great place to visit. You can battle it out on the bumper cars, play arcade games or ride on a rollercoaster. There are a number of attractions suitable for younger children, including boat trips across the lake, so there will be something for kids of all ages.

If you're visiting Colombo, the country's largest city, you may find an open-top bus tour a good way to get your bearings rather than hiring a car. Doing so will allow you and your family to see some of the major attractions at a relaxed pace and depending on the route you take you could see the Colombo National Museum, Independence Square and Vihara Mahadevi Park. Should any of the sights take your fancy, just hop off and explore!
Sri Lanka Family Holiday
One place in Colombo that you and your family will not want to miss is the Dehiwala Zoo. Situated in the south of the city, a wide range of creatures can be seen here, including monkeys and leopards. There is also an aquarium, although it may be the daily elephant show that really catches you and your children's interest.

One place that young children in your group are sure to love visiting is the Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens. Here you can see a wide range of wildlife from flying squirrels and fruit bats to parakeets and black eagles. Young boys and girls will be captivated by the many butterflies. Around 80 species of which can be seen here, including several that are endemic to the country, with crimson rose, ceylon birdwing and blue mormon among the varieties that make Peradeniya their home. You and the children are also bound to enjoy walking through the extensive gardens, spotting various kinds of plants and flowers, before heading to the cafeteria for a spot of lunch.

Before travelling to Sri Lanka on a family holiday you should check with your GP to see if you will require any vaccinations. Diphtheria and hepatitis are some of the most prevalent infections, so you may need to be inoculated against these before leaving. And as malaria is also a common disease, so taking medication to counter this prior to leaving may be advisable, while investing in mosquito repellent may be a good idea.

Making sure that you take the right precautions before you go means that you and your loved ones can concentrate on having as much fun on your Sri Lanka holiday as possible!
