Safety is something everyone should bear in mind, when they go to the beach.

Approximately 65% of UK people go to the seaside at least once a year either for day trips or holidays. Yet every summer, thousands of people get into serious difficulties on Britain's beaches.

Yes it's true that RNLI lifeboat volunteers or search and rescue helicopter crews can respond quite literally within minutes, and often manage to save lives close to the shore. Sometimes though, at the beach, seconds count.

It really is important that there is someone on the shoreline who can

see the dangers develop and can see accidents as they happen; someone who can provide advice to help prevent accidents before they happen and respond instantly in the event that an accident occurs. And that is the role of the lifeguard!

In order to help the beach-going public stay safe on the beaches and in the sea, the RNLI lifesaving charity has some Essential Beach Safety Tips to keep you safe and sound.

1. Swim at a lifeguarded beach, between the red and yellow flags.
2. Check the weather and the tide times before you go.
3. Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas.
4. If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help.
5. If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can't see a lifeguard call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.

Ross MacLeod RNLI Beach Safety said: 'Just remember when heading to the coast this summer please visit a lifeguarded beach and when you arrive, swim and bodyboard between the red and yellow flags. If you have any questions please ask lifeguards for advice to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable day!'

Working in partnership with Seasalt, the RNLI has developed a range of T-shirts and hoodies for children, all made from 100% organic cotton. Prices start from £15 for the t-shirts & 100% of the profits go straight back to the charity. Available through the RNLI Shop's Website, the new range is colourful, easy-to-wear and perfect for all those looking for that relaxed beach style. RNLI Shop focuses on nautical and coastally inspired products to reflect the charity's long standing links with coastal communities across the UK and Ireland and the new Seasalt clothing range echoes the ethos of the RNLI's important life saving work. Ross MacLeod RNLI Beach Safety said: 'It's great news that people can now show their support for lifeguards by wearing clothing from the official Seasalt RNLI range.'
