Parents' Top 20 Toys
LEGO has been voted the greatest toy ever - by parents!

The building bricks were invented in 1949 by carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen in Denmark.

Lego now apparently sells seven sets per second across the world and is enjoyed by both parents and children.

TheBabyWebsite was particularly keen to find out which toys parents truly love. The results of the survey we ran are interesting because these are the people who've had the chance to remember loved toys from childhood as well as experiencing newer toys with their own children.

Nigel Crawford, our Co-Editor, said, 'The results of our survey clearly show that the older toys are the best. The majority of those listed in the top 20 have longevity and have been on the toy market for years.

'Lego was always going to be a massive contender for the top spot, as in reality it would be hard to think of any toy which consistently sells as well and appeals to people of all ages and tastes.'

Scalextric track
The report shows British parents believe Scalextric is the second best toy of all time.

The slot car racing sets first appeared in 1952 when British firm Minimodels invented metal bodied model racing cars under the trademark 'SCALEX'. By the mid-fifties small electric motors had been added to the cars and the Scalextric brand was born.

The third best toy as voted by parents is the board game Monopoly. Despite being dubbed as 'monotony' because the game can last for hours - the game has been cited as one of the biggest selling board games in the world since its launch in the 1930's. The UK version of the game sees players making their way around the board buying London properties in areas such as Angel Islington, Mayfair and Old Kent Road.

Fourth place in the poll goes to the Nintendo Wii. The most modern 'toy' in the top 20 list has sold more than 50 million consoles since its UK launch in 2006. And in fifth place comes the bicycle.

Nigel Crawford continues: 'Toys are played with during our most formative years and therefore have a lasting effect on us. Seeing this list evokes many happy memories of times when I played with most of these toys as a youngster. It's also good to see that many of the toys in the list involve imaginative play or family interaction.

When I looked through the list, there were literally only two or three that I didn't own myself at some point during my childhood and this brought a smile to my face. Many of the toys our children play with today will inevitably become their most memorable when they are parents. '

There are six games included in the top 20 list, as well as Monopoly, Twister, Scrabble, Snakes and Ladders, Connect Four and Cluedo are all considered worthy of the best toy title. Characters and figures play a big part of childhood, as many kids like imaginative play - and parents have voted Barbie and Action man as the seventh and eighth best toys.

Art and crafts games to appear in the top 20 include Etch-A-Sketch, Crayola Crarons and Plasticine. And other toys parents rate include Rubik's Cube and Jigsaw puzzles, and Yo-Yo's.
