Lily, who was 6 months' pregnant, was taken to hospital with stomach pains last week. She had to pull out of a concert at the weekend and a spokesman at the time said she had a viral infection. However, despite all the hospital staff's best efforts, they were unable to save the unborn baby's life. Lily is understandably said to be 'devastated'.

The 25-year-old singer and her partner Sam Cooper waited for the results of their three-month scan before announcing the pregnancy as two years previously Lily had a miscarriage with her first baby.

A spokesman for Lily confirmed: 'It is with great sadness that we have to confirm that Lily Allen and Sam Cooper have lost their baby. The couple ask that their privacy be respected and that they be left alone at this deeply distressing time. No further comment will be made.'
