A survey in America has claimed that women with the O blood group could have more trouble conceiving as they get older. This is the first study to suggest that a woman's blood group could have an effect on her ability to get pregnant.
The researchers from the department of obstetrics and gynaecology at The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York tested a group of women seeking fertility treatment. Those with the blood group O appeared to have a lower egg count and poorer egg quality than the others. Those with blood group A seemed to have more, and better quality eggs.
The findings could lead to women with blood type O being advised to try for a baby earlier. However, experts said more research was necessary before such steps were taken.
Spokesmen from different fertility groups and organisations have described the findings as both interesting and good news, but stressed that further research among the general population, and not just those seeking fertility help should be carried out.
