Nearly half of the babies born in the UK last year were to Mums over 30. There was also a very large increase in the number born to Mums aged 45 and over.
Yesterday's publication of official figures by the Office of National Statistics highlighted the significant change in motherhood in one generation, showing that women were increasingly delaying the age at which they give birth. In 1988 only 28% of births were to mothers over 30, compared to 47% last year.
The number of those giving birth when over 45 rose from 507 in 1988 to 1619 last year. I was not long ago when it was considered dangerous to give birth when over 45, with some midwives even referring to the over 45s as 'geriatric mothers'.
Nowadays, the greater acceptance of older mothers has led to the huge increases seen in the statistics.
Many argue that older mothers make better and more relaxed parents and the sight of an older mother seems so much less unusual these days.
