A new mum became ‘hysterical’ when a midwife cutting her newborn baby girl's umbilical cord cut her finger off! There was ‘blood everywhere’ following the incident and shocked Mum Jasvir Kainth, 28, said she and her husband really thought baby Ishika would survive might not survive.
The newborn was separated from her Mum just minutes after being born, and ushed 17 miles straight from the delivery room in Wolverhampton's New Cross Hospital to Birmingham Children's hospital to have the finger on her left hand sewn back on.
Jasvir said that when the midwife was cutting through the cord with sharp scissors, she cut through the finger as well, but didn't even notice! When her husband told her she'd cut the finger off, the midwife replied, “No I haven't”.
Speaking to The Daily Mail, Jasvir said: 'Giving birth is supposed to be one of the most memorable experiences in your life and this was certainly different - but not in a good way.'
Jasvir's husband Parminder, 36, who was at the birth, added: 'There was only one midwife there for most of the birth, and it was fairly normal otherwise. But after she cut the finger off she left the room for at least 30 seconds to get help. Doing that with a newborn baby who is losing blood all over the place was unbelievable. We were told the midwife who did it had 22 years of experience, so how it happened in the first place we'll never know.'
Staff at the Wolverhampton Hospital have confirmed they were investigating incident. A spokesman said: 'It is being fully investigated by an external investigator and the findings will be shared with both the trust board and the relevant family.'
